There's a place in Kalamazoo called Sweetwaters. They have great donuts.

Around Flint there's no beating Donnas donuts, small family owned.

as for chains, I still preffer a small local "chain" Dawn Donuts. the last one in our area is in a BAD part of town, but man is it worth it.

When I was a kid in Buffalo, the best donuts were Freddie's Doughnuts.
They had the first electric-eye automatic door in Buffalo (the kind common at the front of supermarkets today).
I remember in the 80's the door didn't work well and the place was really old and run-down looking.
They closed down not long after that and they recently demolished the building. Another Buffalo institution that now only exists in memories and pictures.
