Kid's Toy Can Be Used As Date Rape Drug?!?

I'm just getting info on this. I'll post any clarifications as I get them.

The makers of a toy called "Aqua Dots" is asking stores in North America to pull the toy from the shelves. Apparently, if the beads are swallowed it can cause the same effects as a date rape drug!

The "discovery" was apparently made in Australia, where the toy is marketed under the name "Bindeez." I believe it has been recalled in Australia. The beads release the compound "gamma hydroxy butyrate" (GHB), also known as Fantasy." When eaten, the compound, made from common and easily available ingredients, can induce seizures, drowsiness and, in extreme cases, coma and death.

I'm not sure how this was dicsovered, but they definitely didn't have toys like this when I was a kid!

Here is the toy at Wal Mart's site-
    Aquadots Super Studio - Wal-Mart

The toy is made by Moose Enterprises and distributed in North America by a Toronto-based company called Spin Master Ltd. I have no info on any European presence. Here is their statement-

November 7, 2007 – Toronto, ON – Following notification by Moose Enterprises of a recall in Australia of a product called Bindeez, which is similar to the line of toys we distribute for them in North America under the Aqua Dots brand, we are requesting that retailers remove the Aqua Dots toy from retail shelves and sale in North America.

Out of an abundance of caution, we have stopped shipping this item and are working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada.

Spin Master considers all safety issues to be of a serious nature including the media reports with Moose Enterprises’ Bindeez product. In addition to notifying our customers and the appropriate authorities, our company is working diligently to identify any shipments that could potentially be included in a recall by the CPSC and Canadian officials.

Spin Master has always been a trusted company and distributor of children’s products and we have made the safety of children our foremost priority.

We will continue working to ensure that this standard is strictly upheld. We are grateful that this issue was brought to our attention so that we can quickly address it to ensure both the quality and safety of every product that we distribute.

Good Lord! My son actually wanted a set of these for Christmas.

At least the toy company is being responsible and asking for the items to be pulled.

Thanks for the head's up Bill!!!

        If the allegations are true.........

Just the idea this thing got to production could be criminal negligence on the company's part, imo.

No excuses whatsoever-- in this day and age....

IF, the allegations are true-- that is.

One big thing I miss since moving to PA.
This cable company here doesnt carry WABC-7.
            The ABC here is WNEP.
Their main concern is traffic reports for rt 81.

From the CPSC in the US-

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is announcing the recall of more than 4 million units of Aqua Dots toys, made in China, following the reports of two children in the US hospitalized and "going into nonresponsive comas" after playing with the toys. One of the children was 20 months old. This involves products made between April and November 2007.

CPSC says a chemical on the outside of the toys breaks down in the body to become Rohypnol, which is often referred to as a date rape drug.

The side effects of this drug include coma, respiratory depression and seizures.

Thats awful. Makes me think twice about what toys I buy my daughter.

I guess the next news we will hear is they will recall a batch of lead because its contaminated with toys.

Thanks for the heads up Bill. Seems like 2 or 3 items are being recalled each week anymore.

To clarify one point, the coating on the beads is NOT rohypnol, but rather the coating turns into a compund like rohypnol when ingested.

I know the toys with lead are dangerous, but the effects take years of exposure. These things only take one bead being ingested.

Our beloved 30 year old Megos are safer than most new toys it would seem, with all these toys being recalled

Unreal. I think for Christmas instead of toys I'll buy my kids rat poison and knives. At least I'll know what I'm getting.

My five year old daughter might cry when she finds out her Barbie dreamhouse has been replaced with a bear trap, but life is full of dissapointments.
