I thought it was odd how his fantasy life bled over into real life, in the way he would talk to women about their dolls as if were really them and the stuff was actually happening. I think it kind of weirded them out a bit. I also think he would have some of these issues anyway, due to isolation brought on by alcoholism or whatever. At the risk of sounding unsympathetic, I don't think he's anywhere close to being solely the product of his attack.

Sandy,
As you stated it was mainly about his identity crisis and how to come to terms with it in the real world. Hard to be accepted as a cross dresser in a little town and only to suffer with the attempt to be one's self.
I agree, the gallery opening was more compelling and I chocked up when the end results. It was truly a cathartic moment for him and to finally be around those that understand him and won't criticize/ostracize him.
I love this docu and it was well done. The dolls were just a way for him to deal with recovering and easing back into the his world around him.
A study of a true artist. From drawing to photography. Brilliant.Comment

I thought it was a great doco, full of heart. I think there was a lot of mystery as to the motivation of Mark's attackers, with his alcoholism, and his own hinting that perhaps the attack was partly brought on by his own behavior.
In the end though, it seems clear he was bashed by some closeminded thugs, which is terrible.
It's also interesting how talented an artist he was, as a drawer, and how sad that that skill was taken from him.Comment

Yeah that's one of the things I stressed in the review. He was an offbeat fellow before. The attack may have made him stranger, or perhaps, as a result of his creation of Marwencol, made him less so. The toy town became a great outlet for a world he doesn't typically fit into, ours.Comment
