Actually, I thought everything would stay the same, I would just be bigger and older. I really never thought about flying cars, and space ships and stuff like that, b/c I knew it was fiction. Lost in Space, The Jetsons, Star Trek...that was TV. And now, I'm sad that things didn't stay the same.

I figured there'd be lightsaber's, blasters and X-wings everywhere. teleporting was also a big hope considering I walked a LOT in my pre car days and then of course after my first few crappy cars. One day I'll share the story of how I got my first car by trading a 12 pack of beer. Really.

I'm not entirely dissapointed. I think SF usually shortens the years till we achieve progress and SF TV usually cuts that way too short. I think if you want to see a Star Trek-like future it is 750 to 1000 years away; not 300 years away. Star Wars tech maybe longer than that. Not in our life-times.

Star Trek is technologically more advanced than the Star Wars universe.

Can Darth Vader beam from ship to planet?

            Can he time travel?

            No...didn't think so...

Never thought about it like that, but yea - that's true

Without even thinking I would have said Star Wars is more advanced.

Star Wars has always been a bit less technologically advanced than Star Trek...it's obviously less cerebral than Star Trek...Star Wars is more like cowboys and indians in space...lots of shoot 'em up stuff...less thought involved.

Just a small example in technology...compare C-3PO to Data...nuff said...

Good point. One's an awesome Droid who's buddies with R2-D2 and the other is really annoying.

I agree that I'm a little disappointed with our proliferation into space compared to what I dreamed about as a kid.

The thing with science and technology is that it almost never grows in the directions people predict. I remember when I was a kid everyone thought TV phones was a future device we would all have - but the practicality of it never really took off. People knew home computers were inevitable - but nobody could even guess what we'd use them for.

It's funny that no one even came close to predicting the really significant things that have shaped society now - like the internet. Let's not take for granted that we're all miles away talking to each other regularly in our little sub-culture here. It's pretty amazing when you think about it - at least I think it's pretty amazing.

In medicine it's the same thing. In the 70s I think most people predicted we'd cure cancer by now - on the other hand our knowledge of genetics is far beyond what we were even able to conceive. It's also more complex than we might have thought at that point - but that's part of the process too.

Sure, when I was a kid I wanted a jet pack - but right now I'm excited because we're exactly the right age to have witnessed the dawning of a new technological wave.

Maybe I'm easily amazed. I just realized a couple of days ago that the plasma screen I've been using for 5 months has a tiny processor that allows me to play DIVX files by directly through USB devices. I think that's pretty sweet!

I think people underestimate technology that we have. Sure maybe in the 70's you thought about us having a rocket pack... But I have a phone way smaller than the ones you were using then, and I can watch Doctor Who, any episode I want, directly on it anywhere, anytime. Then I can have it give me directions home if I'm lost, listen to music, take pictures, scan barcodes and play video games.

If that's not hi-tech futuristic stuff, I dunno what is!

True. In many ways we have surpassed the expectations. If someone had pointed to a wall of LP records and told me that one day I could carry the equivalent amount of music in a wallet sized package to listen to anytime I wanted I wouldn't have believed them.

And private communication devices were the stuff of Dick Tracy comics or Man From U.N.C.L.E. shows.

Does anyone remember that phone book cover in the 70s that showed people through the ages talking to each other on a variety of phone and it ended with a video phone?
