What do I do with old X-box 360 now?

My 360 caught the Red-Ring of death and died. I seriously thought about replacing it with a PS3 but since we had so much invested in games and peripherals, we bought a new 360 (with Kinnect... it's pretty fun!).

I know that some game stores will buy used 360s, but does anybody take Red-Ring 360s and refurbish them? I'd think that the hard drive and cables would be worth something to somebody.

Or should I just take it out in the backyard and shoot it?

Where did you buy it? I bought mine at Best Buy and they replaced it when I got the RROD.

I can't think of any stores that will take trade ins of dead 360s. Double check your warrenty. You might still be able to exchange it to Microsoft for a refurb. That's about it though.

I feel your pain. Between me and my sister we've had three 360s die. My launch 360 died. So I got a falcon elite and gave my sis the refurb MS sent me. The refurb MS sent to replace my launch 360 died after a few months. The 360 my sister bought to replace the refurb died after about 6 months. My elite is thankfully still going as well as the new small model 360 my sister bought.

I loves me some Halo but if one more 360 dies on me I'm cutting my losses and trading in all my games for PS3 stuff. I'm still on my launch 60 gig PS3.

This 360 is at least four years old now, so I doubt the warranty is any good. If any enterprising person ever comes up with something useful to do with RROD 360s, they'll make a FORTUNE.

I forgot to mention, don't forget to wipe your old hard drive. This is important! Otherwise people can get your account and possibly credit card info. If you are going to try to sell it or trade it in anywhere, erase that hard drive!

There's a couple of ways since the hard drives are removable.

If you used the XBOX transfer cable to copy your old data it would have automatically copied the data to your new hard drive while erasing it from your old. This the way people usually do it.

You can also put into another 360 and erase it. This of course wont work if you have only have access to the new S model 360 which uses a different size drive.

If none of these options are available to you, I'd recommend you smash it. Unless you trust whomever you sell or give it to with your account and credit card info.

I've repaired RROD 360's before... it's totally doable (usually- see point 2), but two things:

1) you really need to know what you're doing (soldering, heat, handling circuit boards)
2) you need to be ok with losing the system entirely depending on what was actually wrong with it.

You can also try Craigslist for your area. There are people that advertise to fix Xboxes there.

The other thing you could try is the towel trick, which is a temporary fix that might allow you to delete your drive rather than smashing it:

It's totally do-a-ble. My Friend who is no electronics Wiz...used an online tutorial to repair his from the 3RR of death. He said it cost him about $12.50 in Parts.

Guess what? That's right, my XBOX just died. Luckily it still fell under the three year extended warrenty because I got the E74 screen of death. Shipped it out today. Hopefully they will fix mine and not send a refurb.
