Just Got Back from The Green Hornet Sneak Preview!!

    -=*-=*-=* MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD!! *=-*=-*=-

First off, I'm more of a fairweather fan of the Hornet. My first viewing of him was probably like many of you, as his guest appearances on Batman and his regular TV show (the latter which I never got a chance to see until the late 80s).

Without spoiling too much, the shoe is now apparently on the other foot with this new movie. Back in the 60s, Batman was tongue-in-cheek and The Green Hornet was serious. Seth Rogan took the character and turned him into more of a bumbling trust fund baby... which sounds sacrilegious, but really makes the character shine. Jay Chou's "Kato" is an accomplished engineer, mechanic, artist (Rogan flips through his sketchbook and pauses on a page featuring a sketch of Bruce Lee) as well as brewing one helluva cup of coffee. Cameron Diaz's "Casey" came across as pretty much like all of her other characters she tend to play, two-dimensional.

The film's baddie, Christoph Waltz's "Chudnofsky"... PHENOMENAL!! He did not get enough screen time!

The Black Beauty... I will own one. The Batmobile no longer holds first place as "First Car to Buy when Lottery is Won!"

The dialog is true to form with most of Rogan's other movies, a lot of one-liners, innuendo, and what feels more like improv at times, but they aren't outright corny (unless it is, and when it is they take it to EXTREME outright corny!) and really do help round out the characters (see above Exception: Diaz, C.). The fight scenes are wonderfully thought out (I don't want to say choreographed because they involve quite a bit of CG), fast paced, and in the aftermath The Hornet takes all the credit, which is one of the major plot points of the movie.

All in all, it was a wonderful buddy-comedy-action flick, that even if you aren't a fan, or know very little of the character, it was still thoroughly enjoyable.

Given that the director's favorite superhero film is Superman III gives me great pause to think this treatment is much better. Plus the guy just came out against everyone at San Diego's Comic Con and said their all fascists... Not a good way to garner support for your film when your attacking the audience this film was marketed to.

Yeah, I remember hearing the antics of the director, and some even worse about Rogan. It's one of the reasons Nick Cage walked out after the first week of filming. Sadly, I think it's going to drive away quite a few people who would otherwise enjoy the film.

I can't figure out why she got the part either. I can think of at east 6 others I think would've fit into the role better. But I'm a fan of Rogan and although I was trepidatious about him playing the role of a superhero, I really enjoyed his take on the character.

I understand the concern too. The movie industry has only begun to embrace the idea of super heroes as a worthy topic to invest hundreds of millions of dollars. And it took decades for that to occur. This genre had only scored one successful franchise through the 70's and early 80's with Superman. Then in '89 Batman took a huge leap by showing the world we could replace tights with molded rubber and conceptualize the comics. Then that was turned on it's ear in 1997 when the Batman franchise suddenly became camp. Killed the franchise and comics were dead once more. Enter 2000 and the X-Men movie did modestly well but was no breakout hit. Then comes 2002 and Spider-man. This movie really changed the fortunes of comic books. Not only as as a valued commodity in Hollywood, but also the very existence of Marvel comics which was bankrupt. It broke it's own genre records at the box office, but more importantly competed against and BEAT the latest Star Wars installment. THAT was significant, because it indicated we had arrived. We had beaten the traditional bully on the street that most films stayed away from. Spiderman not only raised the bar on what a hero film could be, it also made a remarkable impression on both audiences and the industry as to what these films could look like if budgeted properly with top industry talent.

Now look what we have? Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Avengers, the Hulk, Daredevil, and another Spider-man reboot in 3D. And that's just Marvel properties I can think of. Warner Bros. is on it's third and apparently final installment to the highly popular Batman trilogy with Christian Bale. Green Lantern is coming out. The Flash is in the works. I mean it's just mind boggling to see the investment here from Hollywood. So, no... the days of camp and making fun of the traditional superhero is the farthest thing from fans minds right now. I think most fans will be grateful for the Green Hornet to open and quietly disappear into oblivion.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new Green Hornet movie next year. Sorry I haven't posted in awhile, but I do want to thank Scott, Brian, Joe, and Dave, and the nice birthday wish I received from them yesterday. Thanks friends and take care. Jason Broadway.
