    Memories of Christmas past...

Hey, I'm just taking a break from cleaning the house. This will be my very first Christmas alone. Falcon was gonna come for a visit, but he can't. But I'm determined to have a good Christmas anyway. I'm giving a party for the staff at my school this coming Saturday, and to do this, I'm channeling Mom.
I even dug out a picture of her at one of our New Year's Eve parties when I was about 5 or 6. Mom always made Christmas special. So many memories come flooding back at this time of year. I have the old Christmas records we've played every year since I can remember, (and playing them as I clean), I still have the star, that's about as old as I am, and the 2 toy soldier ornaments, that are falling apart, that Mom got for me and my foster sister when I was 7. The same reversable plastic tablecloth (one side for Christmas, and one side for birthdays), that we put on the Castro convertible table for Christmas dinner, is on the table by the window that the tree will go on. I remember all the hustle and bustle that came every year w/ Christmas in New York. Me at 3 years old in my red 2 piece snow suit, visiting Santa at Macy's, (and not liking it all that much). The windows in the stores all decked out and the street corner Santas. My dad, forever the cheapskate, waiting until Christmas Eve night to get our tree. But y'know, it still doesn't seem right to get it before then, so I get mine Christmas Eve too, always have. We never finished decorating it before I went to bed, so when I would get up to go to the bathroom, I'd pass by the tree. I always stood there a minute, watching tinsel and garlands sparkling in the dark, and peeking under the tree, to see which presents had my name on them. I never touched them, I'd just look, lest Santa would get mad and take them all back.

OK, I've bored you enough, waxing sentimental. Does anyone have any Christmas memories that you think about as you're getting ready for the big day?

Christmas Traditions are the best. We follow these traditions in order to put us into the space where, as you say, we can "channel" those who have gone on. I guess it's the familiar things that we do that makes the memory of them so poignant. My Christmas Tradition is a French Canadian "réveillon". As little kids we'd go to bed about 6PM (to the smell of baking from the oven) and would be wakened after Santa had come. We'd eat and open our presents. When we were old enough to go to Midnight Mass we'd come home after the service and eat then open our gifts.

Haven't been to Midnight Mass in decades. I long ago let that be the gig for the "Christmas Eve Catholics" -- at least they get to Church once a year.

My most vivid Christmas memory was the year that I got my Atari 2600. As a little kid, I usually didn't know what I was going to get, but that year, I really suspected that I was getting an Atari. I wanted one so bad. I couldn't sleep that night. It's the first time in my life that I couldn't sleep for the whole night. It was the longest night of my life! I remember getting out a crappy kids activity book and doing every single activity on every single page just trying to kill time until I thought it was safe to wake up my parents. The big family Christmas was at our house that year, so everyone played the Atari all day. It was awesome!
Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.

                  Actually, it's still possible...

Back in '96, about a year before I met my wife, I was working at Peat Marwick (back when there were 'big 8' accounting firms..), and JUST started recollecting vintage 12" GI Joes. About a week before Christmas, I placed an order with FAO Schwartz for one of the exclusive Astronaut reproduction sets, stating several times, 'no worries, it doesn't have to get to me by Christmas, a few days later is just fine..'.

Well, as St. Nick would have it, I went out Christmas Eve to my church (with all the other singles..) to sing carols with the church choir. Lo and behold, when I got back home, 10pm Christmas Eve night, with the gentle snow falling..., there it was..:

Under a sidedoor light.., was my reproduction Joe Astronaut. I had a lot of nice Christmas's as a child opening presents under the tree, but now as a 30something adult, this brought back the SAME childlike thrill..., all over again.

                  The magic never fades..
                  Peace.. Through Superior Firepower.

I think it was our second Christmas in this house, and it was my best one as an adult, b/c it did capture that Christmas magic I felt as a kid. Falcon had decided to make it a Batman Christmas for me and sent this HUGE box containing: Almost all of the Batman 60s series on tape, the 60s Batman TV show soundtrack record, and a shirt he made w/ a NYC nighttime cityscape, w/ the TV show Batman logo, but w/ "HardyGirl" written inside the bat. Also included was a Bionic Woman Comic book, a POTA video, and a CD of Christmas carols. I felt like a kid again, playing the record and watching that show. My mom had also given me a video of The Littlest Angel w/ Johnny Whitaker. And I hadn't seen that special since I was little. It was really a great Christmas.

CHRISTMAS 1966. My dad found these this weekend, and I thought I would share. First photo is me with Captain Action Batman in front of my cardboard Batcave. I still have 'em both, but the cave is badly water damaged. Second photo has some hidden treasures in the background: Marx Talking Batphone, Captain Action, CA Superman set, Marx Zorro playlet, and Marx ride-on Batmobile. Still have all of those except the Zorro set. The last photo speaks for itself...
