Do people buy vintage toys for Christmas?

I used to dread this, not that i am ungrateful, but vintage toy/comic collecting is very exact and "Oh .. you love Spider-man, right?' can open up all kinds of nightmares for a control freak like me So do people buy vintage toys for someone dear at Christmas?

only if I know they're a collector ... and know what they collect I might

I know what you mean I appreciate anything someone gives me, but I'll get stuff from my aunt like a jar jar binks child place setting. then I feel guilty getting rid of it since it was a gift, but what the hell am I going to do with it ... I don't even have a kid that can use it.

I do buy Vintage items as gifts, but it's for friends/family that I know and I know what they are looking for or what they need for their collection. I've had friends/family buy me items for my collection that I loved getting for Christmas...it was more fun opening those up than cologne or a shirt!

Sure, of course! This year, my wife got me a Mego BatCave, several figures, and just recently a BatMobile! Also, my friend gave me some Mego suits and a few nude figures, and a very KIND fellow member here gave me an AMAZING vintage gift - though I'm not sure if I should mention it now - because of the 'SECRET Santa' thing - ?
(I dont want to let any cats out of any bags..)

And yes, I also give vintage - many times over.

All in all, I have received more Mego goodness THIS Christmas than I ever did as a kid!

Ha!! This is all too real...lol! I have an entire closet full of modern Spider-Man plates, bendy straws, pillow cases, cutains, oven mitts...etc, that I just can't bring myself to sell as they were given as gifts. Of course it is the thought that counts and I am lucky to have a five year old son who has inherited many of these items, but even he finds some of the stuff to be "lame"...

It's not that I don't appreciate the sentement, but it goes back to Clem's original statement of vintage toy/comic collecting being "exact" and my own control issues...lol.

With the exception of the kids, the only gifts the wife and I give to other firends and family are vintage toys. It's our way of trying to help folks get into the fun aspect of Christmas. We do however make sure it is something they either had as a kid or really wanted. The results have been wonderful!

I personally only buy vintage stuff for my husband, dad or sister, since I know them like the back of my hand.

And even then I try not to tread to heavily. I know go that route if I am certain that the item is needed for the collection and that the condition is either what they are looking for, or low grade enough to justify "space holder" status.

One of my favorite surprise gifts was a vintage Bermuda Triangle board game. I'm sure they weren't taking condition into consideration so it would have been nice if they had known to get one in nicer condition but I still loved it.
My dad has hinted around a few times about seeing comics on ebay and asked me questions bout them (I collect them) and I assume he's been thinking about buying them for me but he knows nothing about them. Unfortunately he'd probably get ripped off or buy something I really don't collect.

I do for kids. The kids who I babysit who I know groove on my stuff, have gotten some cool things from me. People know that I'm a Star Trek fan, so I've gotten some really cool things. And even if it's something I may not use, they were thinking of me. I think it's better than the obligitory gift card of coffee mug.

Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

^ I fully understand and agree.

On a semi-related note..... I gave my entire vintage Star Wars collection to my nephew Travis when he was around 7 years old. (This was well over ten years ago..) I soon realized what a horrid error that was after seeing gray bits of plastic that used to be vehicles strewn about the yard, along with headless and limbless figures, but hell, he enjoyed himself apparently!

Pretty much all of my friends and family buy me vintage stuff for whatever occasion though, yep. For my last birthday, one of my sisters got me a ThunderCats t-shirt, my buddy got me a Krusher, and my father-in-law (think R. Lee Ermey ) got me a $50 gift card for the comic shop, so, yep...

I have given a few vintage toys (or comics or other collectables) as gifts, but not many. I don't think I've ever received a vintage toy as a gift (except from one fellow Mego collector who really knows his stuff!). With that said, a lot of my friends are very creative, broke people and I have received some amazingly awesome gifts that relate to my collection and other interests without actually being expensive collectables.
Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.
