    U2 appreciation thread

    I beleive I have started a thread with this title before.
    Memory serves me not in this matter............
    U2 holds a special part in my life,as do so many other artists,as I associate many memories of happy and less than happy times with music.
    During my teen years in the 80s,I would have denied any feelings towards this band,as I was a die-hard head-banger.
    In retrospect,(I was a secret admirer).
    I feel this band has and will stand the test of time, for I beleive they have touched many in the same way they have touched me.

    U2 is one of the few 80's bands I can tolerate --- and coming from me that's saying a lot

                I liked early U2...but their later stuff is inconsistent. A good song here and there...but nothing that would make me want to buy the whole Album.

                  Yeah, I loved them in high school, but stopped caring much after they did Achtung Baby.

                      This is a tough one for me;

                      Musically, I think they are pretty incredible. Every single one of them... In my opinion, they kinda remind of Rush. Granted, Larry Mullen Jr is no Neil Peart, but who is? The way the songs are written, arranged and produced (C'mon, they worked with Brian Eno and Jimmy Iovine) are pretty flawless and impeccable. I have all the early stuff and listen to it often. However... The political overtones to their stuff have gotten out of control and now, it's almost to the point of where Bono does more talking about his political views during the shows, than sing. It's kind of annoying and quite frankly, is a turn off. I don't mean that I even agree or disagree with his views, but to inject THAT much politics into the music, regardless of what side you're taking, is too much.

                      I still listen to some of the early stuff and I watch "Rattle and Hum" every now and then because I love Phil Joanou, but the new stuff... Eh.

                        Too much political talk in a song could ruin its timelessness.

                        Beatles didn't mention politics and their songs are still relevant today.

                        Compare that to some other songs that speak about the topic of the day.

                            I remember a thread about U2 a while ago. It seems like I wrote something long. This time I'll just say that U2 quite literally changed my life. The Joshua Tree album in particular is directly responsible for my career and indirectly responsible for almost every one of my friends. So yeah, I would say that U2 means a lot to me.
                            Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.

                              Just my personal taste: I can't really listen to anything post "Joshua Tree" - maybe there's a couple songs off "Rattle and Hum" that I don't mind. Their early sound was more exciting to me and as they kept going they never recaptured my interest.

                              "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is an incredible song.
