    Cell phone gurus. Upgrade question.

    Hey group,
    I have an original 16gb 2g iPhone.
My two year contract has been up since feb 2010 and i have stayed on month to month.
Since my plan is legacy, i have unlimited data....a plan no longer available unless you pay the high whopping price..

Shouldn't I be able to buy a phone outright, new or used, and transfer my number to it via iTunes or something without changing my plan?

I am wanting to move up to 3G now that it is in my area.

No, unfortunately they will not let you do that. If you could get your hands on an already activated phone you could probably get away with it by cutting your sim card down to the smaller size. However, I doubt you'd be able to find one. I guess if you get a jailbroken one from ebay it would work like that. That would probably be the way to go. Otherwise they require activation at the store when you buy them and then you get moved over to the new plans
