Anyone else here a Rock N Roll geek?

    Hello everyone,

Is there anyone else here that is a big fan of Rock music?
I am sitting here right now listening to Manowar's song 'Defender', is there anyone else here that can share my feelings towards heavy metal and rock in general? I have been listening to Metallica, KISS and Manowar since they 80's and next year I get the honor of seeing Iron Maiden live in concert.
Am I the only one that's going to see them, they are going on tour really soon.

      >I am sitting here right now listening to Manowar's song 'Defender'

Mmmm..... Manowar..... I haven't heard their newest album yet (Gods of War) but I do like their stuff. Best. Workout. Music. EVER!

      >Is there anyone else here that is a big fan of Rock music?

I'm, a huge fan of almost all music. I had a friend who was a bigtime music afficianado: he had over 10,000 CDs and uncounted numbers of casettes, vynil and even 8-tracks. He was always looking for something he'd never heard before; and accordingly the bunch of us were exposed to all sorts of music.

      >is there anyone else here that can share my feelings towards heavy metal and rock in general?

Have you seen "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" yet? Excellent film. I recommend it to people who HATE metal, since it does an excellent job of presenting the reasons why people like this sort of thing. (The interview with Mayhem doesn't exactly sway new fans but it IS pretty funny....) Another good music doccumentary is "American Hardcore;" a film about the 80's punk scene. Contrasting the two is absolutely fascinating.

      >I have been listening to Metallica, KISS and Manowar since they 80's

Let's not forget Savatage (now the Trans-Siberian Orchestra; who I also really like) Judas Priest, Queensryche, Gamma Ray (who are sort of a serious version of Spinal Tap with the most overwritten songs in music) and, for no apparent reason; Jethro Tull.

Although a guy I know WASN'T incensed that they beat Metallica for the award back in 88. He pointed out that although they don't have the sound they DO write about a lot of the same themes and ideas. Weird. He's not wrong.

      >and next year I get the honor of seeing Iron Maiden live in concert.

It's amazing that those guys are in their 60's and STILL jump around on stage.

No I'm just a "toy" geek--I guess---so hard to find the "right way" to be
        self-depreciating... ***sigh***

Anyways---I love rock 'n roll (and hate it---its a double edged mistress)

My top favorite artists are probably: DAVID LEE ROTH, SPINAL TAP, BEATLES,
PRESIDENTS OFTHE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AEROSMITH, THE DOORS,
THE POLICE, SIMON & GARFUNKEL, NEIL DIAMOND, DONOVAN, PRINCE,
VIOLENT FEMMES, BILLY JOEL, PINK FLOYD, JOE JACKSON, AC/DC & KISS

There are a few more "toppers" I'm probably forgetting----anyways---I don't particularly
LIKE going to concerts, but I tolerate some of them as I feel that if I DON'T go to
certain ones, I'm forsaking a passion of mine---in other words: gotta appease the
"rock gods" by showing up at fave artists shows when I see absolutely fit

I listen to a lot of music though...

and I also enjoy PERFORMING, WRITING and RECORDING my own music VERY much---
and altho' that's not really the same thing as being obsessed with another artist's work--
it's still being obsess"IVE" about rock 'n roll---"geek" or not

I love ABBA too, they are easily one of the greatest band's ever, I was just listening to them this morning, if you want me to go into the other bands/singers I am obsessed with them I can be typing up a storm. Bee Gee's I feel I should mention too, I have the Saturday Night Fever vinyl and I listen to it all the time, that has some really good Bee Gee's on it.
CTC, Manowar's album God's of War is a real masterpiece, you should get it (download it if you must, I did), or at least just hear the song "Warriors of the World" it will rock your sock's off, and I must agree, when I workout I play Manowar, funny how Manowar goes good with doing exercises...strange.

Not to be hard on you Ninja but why would hard rock music that has a "Warrior" and "anthemic"
vibe to it be strange to workout to? You can't get much more intense (and primal) and
psych yourself up much more than that...
perfect music to work your body to

Very hard rock or very hard groovin dance music are about the best you can get when it
comes to workouts in my opinion

                BTW--I,too love the SNF soundtrack!

yeah I know what you are saying there, but what I was getting at is Manowar seem's to be almost designed for working out, Metallica, Rammstein and other rock bands don't seem to be effective, believe it or not, I actually discovered Manowar because their song "Defender" (I love that song) was used in a workout video I have.
If you go to the Gym they have music that is made for teenage girls, like modern party music....maybe I am not going to the right gyms

I grew up with hard rock/metal from Ozzy to Disturbed and everything in between, Maiden, Metallica (Black and before), Lizzy Borden . . . . . .
Anyway, since coming to Christ I have found that some of my old "friends" are not as appealing as they once were. This is not a judgement at all just a personal preference.
However, I was more than jazzed to find a Christian Rock Station one day and now I enjoy bands like Kutless, Skillet, Day of Fire, Mainstay, Relient K and many more. It's certainly not your Grandma's Christian Music. There's a lot of talent out there in many forms (except rap) it's great to see progressive music with a good message for todays youth . . . . . . . and 45 yr old men!

                        lol,
I must agree, but each to their own right? Almost everything I like/do/say people hate, Manowar for example recieves a lot of criticism, even Metallica is considered to be "one of the wussiest band's of all time".
At least the Christians are having a go at it, in fact Christian rock often heavily out sell's maintstream music because of church goers buying the CD's when they leave Church every Sunday.

Oh, I see now...we're certainly on the same page with Manowar---
some of the "teenage girl" music I can tolerate for workout music, I guess,
only if it has a driving beat (for starters)

I HEARTILY respect Jim's preference---its all about what floats your boat---lifts your
heart---gets you going etc etc.----even Jim knows tho' that the music I make
for my OWN projects is heavy on the sex, violence, drugs and such thematically--
--so you can see where I fall on THAT subject with what I listen to

Big fan of Rhoads-era Ozzy here by the way

Some good choices there, but the DC5 is not a band that was around in the 1950's... And Bobby Darin, sure he had a few uptempo songs, but I'd be hard pressd to call him a rock and roller.

Thanks for the restraint Bat, but I would take no offense. Christian and Rock would not seem to go together but if you haven't heard some of the bands I listed check em' out. If you don't like the message, I'm confident the music is up to par. Very good musically and for someone like me you loves the guitar as much as anyone, I find it equal to some of the stuff I grew up on. Metallica's first few years produced some of the best music, used to play Fade to Black over and over. Since the "Black album", I would say Wussiest band applies. Great thread!
