    Bizzare foods in Englewood Florida!

Filipino Bulat. This morning before we started our work day. My co-worker Lou tried to introduce us to a Filipino delicacy know as "Bulat". If you do not know what Bulat is, it is a duck egg embryo, 24 days old, cooked in the shell. WARNING: This may be unsuitable to some viewers (including myself) and there is some language. So, without any further delay, I give you Englewood Florida's version of Bizarre foods!

    Balut....BARF!

Man, I have eaten from nearly every culture on the planet it seems, and have had some 'odd' bits, but a RANCID FETUS?? No way in HELL sir....

As to that show, thats pretty cool. They recently filmed one of those shows here - but not Zimmern's show though, a similar one maybe? (Dives and Diners sound right?)
Zimmern is a gourmand for sure, but many of the things that he eats for 'shock value' are beyond grotesque...Fish offal putrified in a rinsed-out Pepsi bottle? Dumplings mixed with saliva and left in the sun to curdle?? ...Jesus man, come on...

I'll stick with my domesticated yard bird eggs, over easy or scrambled with sausage, peppers and onions!

My nephew-in-law is Filipino and eats them sometimes.

To them it's like us eating a regular hard boiled egg.

I think I saw them eaten on one of the Survivor series years ago. It looks completely gross but heard it really doesn't taste bad at all if you like hard boiled eggs.

I found it interesting to learn that Andrew Zimmern at one point in time in his life, was a homeless drug addict that snatched purses to feed his addiction!

A little back story about all this. Last Wed. Our administrator let us off work early to start the thanksgiving weekend. We all went to the local watering hole and after a few beers the topic of Bulat came up for some reason. There was a lot of trash talking going on "I would eat that no problem!" , "I can eat anything!"
Lou called the bluff and you can see the end result.

Now he is talking about bringing us in a dish that is made of ox tail and peanut butter (Kare Kare).

That would probably be pretty good.

Most Chinese food flavored with sesame has a peanutbuttery taste and ox tail is just fatty meat -- like prime ribbish with bone.

I would try it in a second.

OMG...kare kare is food of the gods...but it must be eaten with bagoong or it won't taste proper.

balut...can't sit at a table if there's balut on there. i have an intense bird phobia and i would probably hyperventilate and pass out. i used to eat it as a kid. the bones crunch, i hear...like eating cartilage.

you should ask him to bring you some dinuguan. it's really delicious.

I was wondering when you was going to chime in!

Louie has explained all of these dishes to me thoroughly. I know that bagoong is a salty "shrimp paste?" and it gives him gout!
and, he has explained to me what dinuguan is but he has yet to bring some in for us to try. His wife (also Filipino) is an AMAZING asian cook. So good in fact that one of the guys at work had her cater his wedding. I don't know if it's Filipino or not but her egg rolls are simply killer!

Yeah, I kinda struggled with the visuals this morning. It was a fun start to our day.

I've tried balut...not my favorite thing in the world...but I could handle it.

I'm one of those who are open to all cultures and cuisines...I'll try everything at least once.

Having said that...balut is not at the top of my menu selection...

But oh man...Filipino lechón...food of the gods...
