I just wanted to give a shout out to new members, that what you see for prices in the Marketplace is not necessarily what the going rate is. Do your research or ask questions.
Yeah.
For example, what doesn't work for me:
Seller: "I'm selling object X, but what should I ask for it? Hmmmm...."
Me: "I'm interested, name your price."
Seller: "Aha, you're obviously are a collector who is aware of the prices, give me those prices and that's what I'll be charging then..."
What is expected of me here? That I do the research, and then name a good price (for the seller)?
Tell you what, I usually wait for a low price (surprise, surprise) and then buy. Which is a good price for the buyer.
Sometimes I feel like a "mark" in the marketplace.
But no big deal. In cases like these the seller won't sell (to me), and the possible buyer won't buy.
I wish people would just give a ballpark figure, and be open for some negotiating (like 20% off), that would save a lot of time and effort on both sides....

Add prices to your items. People don't respond much to "best offers."
Thank you Theressa! This is one of the things that bugs me to no end. I have had this discussion numerous times with members and even some mods. My opinion is that if you do not put a price on an item you are selling, and instead say make offer, you are turning the sale into an auction, plain and simple, which is not allowed in the Marketplace. I have had some friendly conversations with some of the people who sell that way, and with no disrespect to them, saying that "I don't know what it is worth so that's why I ask to make an offer" doesn't cut it with me. The reason people say make an offer is because they don't want to set a price in case a buyer is willing to pay more. If you TRULY do not know what an item is worth, do some research either on ebay or other avenues and figure it out. I find it VERY difficult to believe that a price cannot be found for anything that get's sold in the Marketplace. If you want top dollar for something and want to feel people out for how much they are willing to pay, SELL IT ON EBAY! If you are willing to accept a reasonable price for an item so that it goes to a fellow collector and stays "in the family" sell it in the Marketplace. It bugs me when people try to get ebay prices for stuff sold here AND then ask you to use the personal payment option on paypal. They want top dollar without having to pay ebay/paypal fees. It's good I am not a mod as I would delete any sales thread that didn't have pricing. Ok, I'll get off my soapbox. This subject just hit a nerve with me.
Trades can work, if both parties communicate.
If a trade is offered, do let the person know if its acceptable or not.
Try to send a want list of specific items.
Example; a Batman figure. Is a T1 or T2 wanted?
Original parts or repro? Condition; cherry or beat up?
How important it is to you won't be known if we're not told.
More details provided is great for all
Wants, original parts; thinking...

Best offer really isn't an auction because people that state best offer always have the option of not selling their item if they're not happy with the offers.
Doing that with an auction is clearly underhanded and shunned by all.

Amen to that

I won't disagree with the fact that they can turn down those offers, but I really don't think that is the reason they are saying "best offer". They are doing that because they are afraid that if they state a price, they are possibly losing dollars if anyone out there is looking for that item(s) and would be willing to pay more. When you say "best offer" you are turning a sale into silent auction by being able to field a number of prices. And I feel that not only is that against Marketplace rules, but more importantly, it goes against the spirit of the Museum in general. Now, I have no problem with someone putting a price (even a high one) on an item and THEN stating that they will accept offers if the buyer doesn't want to pay that price. At least then you have a general idea of a starting point. And if the seller is worried that the high price might scare people away from making offers, then you are acknowledging that you are asking more then it's worth, so price it at what you think it is worth.
And, I will say this. I am not condemning anyone who sells this way. I don't think it should be done or allowed, but this is only my opinion. I am not a mod or the Marketplace police or anything even close. I am not claiming I am right in everything (even though I obviously feel that I am in this instance). I just wanted to vent over something that constantly bothers me. So let me state for the record that anyone who sells this way can forget me as a buyer. Any chance you might have had to make a sale to me is GONE!
I also have to add that I have talked with a few who sell this way. One MM member/seller in particular and I PM'd a bit and I gained a ton of respect for the guy. I will not mention any names but I sent him a scathing PM (which I probably should have waited a few hours after I typed it as I was all fired up and could have reworded it a bit). I fully expected a scathing reply and it didn't happen. He sent me a very well stated and thought out reply and he was a perfect gentleman when I didn't deserve it. So, kudos to him.
