OK - I admit it, I am an addict...

Yes, I am a Mego addict and a Cokeaholic (Cola, not the white powdery stuff) but another addiction I have is electronic gadgets. I get antsy if I don't get a new one every few months. And the high I get waiting for one to arrive after I have purchased it is unbelievable. I waited in line for the first iPhone and then the iPhone 4 when it came out this summer. And I would have waited in line for the iPad except Apple shipped preorders of those so they arrived the same day they were released in stores. I was camped out at the door waiting for the UPS driver that day, let me tell you. I also upgrade my Macbook Pro and Mac Pro once a year, although my latest versions are pretty sweet. I don't think I will be upgrading either for a while unless they add some spectacular feature. I usually upgrade by selling my current units after the new ones are announced, but before they are actually released. That way I get maximum value on the sale. If you wait until the new models are released, you lose a chunk of cash selling the previous model. Of course, that leaves me without a unit until the new one is released, but they upgrade the laptop and desktop models at different times so I am never completely without a computer.

My iPad is probably my favorite piece of electronic gear, but I just got a new one Friday that I was skeptical about initially, but has really won me over. I was reading about the Dell Streak which is their current electronic tablet that is also a phone. It runs the Google Android OS. Now I am a rabid Apple fanatic and I much prefer Apple's operating systems for both their computers and their smaller gadgets (iPhone, iPad), but I was curious about the Streak and hadn't purchased a new gadget since the iPhone in June, so I ordered it with the full intention of playing with it for 28 days and then returning it. Two days later, I have probably changed my mind. This is a pretty cool gadget. I still prefer Apple's iOS over the Android OS, but it's not bad at all. The biggest complaint on the Streak is that it is too big for a phone and not big enough for a tablet. And I have to agree with that, I do look ridiculous with it up to my ear when making calls and I wouldn't want to use it full time as a tablet. But that's what I have my iPad for and I installed the Kindle app on the Streak and it works for reading when I don't have my iPad. Plus with the Kindle sync system, I can read a book on either device and pick up where I left off on the other device (isn't technology grand). I thought it would be a pain transferring my info from the iPhone to the Streak, but using my Gmail account it was actually pretty easy to get my contacts transferred over. Not as easy as it is with an iPhone, but not near as hard as I thought it would be.

Anyway, just wanted to vent my thoughts. It looks like I will be keeping the Streak for now and my daughter is ecstatic as she got the iPhone. If anyone was considering getting a Streak, it has my endorsement, and this is coming from a longtime Apple user and gadget aficionado.

Heh, I'm the exact opposite. I don't have an iPhone or iPad or any other gadget. Hell, I don't even get a new cell phone till my old one is really dead and gone, which takes years

I'm with you on the phone thing Thomas . . . I have NO USE for texting . . . the other day my wife and I were at the mall and she was exchanging something so I was wandering around outside in the mall area where Verizon had a promotion going on to see who was the fastest texter. I walked by and the girl asked me if I wanted to try it. I told her that I don't text . . . she looked at me like I was a lepper . . .

I don't text a lot. My son and daughter are the family texters. My wife does quite a bit as well. I usually see only around 150-200 per month on my phone statement. It is convenient when I want to ask someone a quick question and either don't need an immediate response or don't want to get into a phone conversation. It's also very convenient when you want to communicate with someone when you can't make any noise.

I also never text...and I hate people who do...especially younger folks...it's downright annoying.

I took one of my friend's son's (17 years old) to In 'N Out for a burger...I hardly talked to him...he was constantly texting...but I finally said...if you want me to treat you to a burger meal...you must put that down that bloody phone...and join the living...or else...you pay for your own burger.

                  So...he finally did...thank God...lol.

I too...kinda addicted to Coke...but 90% of the time is Coke Zero (cherry flavor)...I do prefer regular Coke...but that would be too much sweets for me.

I like my beer too (duh)...but to preserve my liver...I only have one per day during my dinner...however...it increases on the weekends...lol.

Don't mention it. You will be happy with the iPad. It is the coolest gadget I have ever owned, hands down.

I'll get the iPad too...for I'm also an Apple fanatic.

Don't need to upgrade my Mac Pro though...it's so suped up...it's not even funny...Quad core (I really don't need more than that), 20 inch Apple Display Cinema, two super drives DVD burners...and all four hard drives installed...running Snow Leopard 10.6.4, CS5 Adobe Master Collection, Final Cut Pro, QuarkXpress, Painter 11, Manga Studio, Parallels BootCamp (virtual Windows), wireless Bluetooth keyboard & mouse, Wacom Intuos4, and tons of other stuff...I have too much computer right now, lol...

I am at it again! I have been reading about the Motorola Xoom for months now. I finally decided a few weeks ago that I had to try one out (tablets are probably my favorite piece of tech gear right now). I inquired at Amazon and they do not know when they will be able to sell it, so my only choice was to get one from Best Buy. I checked it out and the store in Lancaster, PA was going to have them on the release date (yesterday). So, I figured I would make a run down to Lancaster on Saturday and get one. Well, I am at the barbershop this past Tuesday, I had to find a new barber as the one I have been going to for the past 20 years (and is a block from my house) closed recently. So, here I am at this new barbershop and sitting next to a gentleman who is monkeying around with his Samsung Galaxy Tab. So we get to talking about tablets and he says "we just got some Motorola Xooms in today" and I asked who we is and here the dude works at Best Buy. I asked him how many they got and he tells me - FIVE! and three are already pre-ordered. So I ask him to put one back for me and he does. I drove down yesterday and got it. What are the odds that the new barbershop I find has a guy sitting there who works for Best Buy and can tell me that I would have been outta luck had I gone down there this weekend to buy one? I must have been meant to have it. Anyway, to make a long story longer, this is a pretty cool tablet. We finally have one to give the iPad a run for it's money. Although it is expensive, and to be able to use WiFi, you have to sign up for at least one month of Verizon's 3G data plan. You can cancel after that month, but the initial fee is 80 bucks with the activation fee and taxes. So, that's a scam if I ever saw one. The iPad lets you activate and deactivate the data plan as often as you like. The other thing that is a major drawback to any tablet running the Android OS, is that Netflix does not have an Android app. Next to reading Kindle books on my iPad, the thing I do most is watching movies streamed from Netflix. So, that's a big drawback for Android tablets. The Xoom actually has a better screen size for movies as it is slightly bigger and in true 16:9 widescreen, compared to the iPad's more 4:3 ratio. The unit itself is a bit smaller than the iPad, even though the actual viewable screen is bigger, as they have much less of a bezel around the screen. The best news is that the Xoom has no problems whatsoever with the Museum on it's browser, unlike all of the Android tablets running OS 2.2 or earlier. Those have trouble scrolling some of the pages here, most notably the galleries. The Xoom is running Android OS 3, which was designed specifically for tablets. So, I give a 4 star recommendation to the Xoom, the lost star being the lack of a Netflix app and the Verizon scam you have to go through to enable WiFi. It's a very close second to the iPad.

I prefer Beta to VHS. It seems to have better quality, as do 8-tracks.

Cool. I work in the Tegra team at nVidia (the processor inside the Xoom), but I don't get a discount or anything. Obviously, I'd like the Xoom and other Tegra-based phones and tablets to do well in the market. Personally, I'd be interesting a getting the wifi-only version when it becomes available.
