There is a Best Western half a block away, its the closest geographically. I know Doc Mego had a room there 2 years ago at NYCC. Your basic standard hotel room. I think you are looking at $110-130 a night. I would doubt you will find much lower than that. So I guess it depends what you deem affordable.Comment

I'm thinking the best Western looks like the best deal too from what I can find on the internet. Its not so much cost I guess...I just dont want to get hosed by some flea bag hotel.
Jersey might be a good idea too. Is there a footpath across the water, or do you have to take the tunnel (ie cab or train)? I was in New York years ago, and had some issues with a cab driver who charged me a small fortune to go from Laguardia to the old toy building on fifth ave. Made me so mad, I got a ride back to the airport after my meeting and flew back asap! Trying to prevent a repeat! I'm not so ...polite...these days, and would probably end up with an assault charge or something!!"Crayons taste like purple!"Comment

Depending on your dates, a site like Hotwire.com would be worth looking into, but keep it 3.5 stars or better, or you could end up someplace pretty scary. Its been a few years, but I've been able to book 4 star hotels for the same price range or lower using Hotwire. Cab prices should be fair if you are keeping to midtown areas.

Have you heard there is a Bed-Bug problem in NYC hotels? There is. Read up on it on the internet! Check Jersey too.

Try checking Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, maybe Rego Park, and Flushing in the suburb of Queens, NY and compare their hotels for quality, services and prices-and Bed Bug problems. Their prices may be lower & there is easy access access to the subway which will get you into the city in 20-30 minutes.
The first two are very nice areas. Nice places to eat and shop. Tho you would probably prefer to eat in Manhattan if you are sight-seeing. The last 2 are not really bad but look kinda' sketchy at night. Flushing is like a Chinatown area. I sometimes take the subway from Flushing and it's not really bad at night. It just looks dirty-lotsa' litter. Rego Park is border-line.
You could even look at Bayside, NY which is far but there is the Long Island Rail Road which is a better quality train ride to NYC but more a expensive trip, ( $5-6 per ride compared to local subway which is $2.50 per ride). LIRR does have limited stops and last stop is Penn Station at 33rd St. in NYC. Someone did tell me tho the local mall in Bayside has a Bed Bug problem. Not sure if it has afected the hotels.
I would suggest Elmhurst, Woodside & Long Island City but they really are going downhill and scary-lookin' at nightLast edited by johnmiic; Nov 19, '10, 8:45 AM.Comment

Whats up with bed bugs these days? the little...buggers...are everywhere!!!
Thanks for the list John, I'll check into these too.
Fivr or six bucks isnt horrible for a train ride. the LRT in Calgary is around 3 bucks (and due to go up in the spring) with parking costing an average of 9 dollars (per 4 hours). As long as I can stay away from those greedy cabbies. When it costs almost a hundred bucks (well, 70 dollars anyways) for a ride its clobberin' time!"Crayons taste like purple!"Comment
