Picture that made me cry

On another forum I am a member of, some one post pictures related to veterans. As a veteran of the 1st Gulf War, I am usually not moved by photos related the soldiers killed in action, etc. You would think it would be the other way around, but I guess it is just programmed in my head that death is apart of war, making me numb to it.

The photos, although are sad, didn't spark an emotion in me. A few other people followed up with other pictures, and same thing.

sometimes it is good to be reminded that the brave men and woman dying to protect our freedom are more than just statistics and they have families and children too. Truly this is a tragically tender moment captured in the picture. God bless our armed forces.

I had to do that once...

As a commander about 15yrs ago, I had a young soldier commit suicide. We never knew the reason why, but I know family issues were at large.

Not combat-related (directly), but as his commander, we provided him a military funeral with the 'gun salute' and everything. I presented the American flag to the wife (who was melting and falling apart in front of me..), using the official words "on behalf of a grateful nation".

Everything at the funeral was precise and distinguished, calling into play the highest standards and traditions of honored military service..., the fallen comrade and his surviving family deserve no less.

But it was STILL the toughest thing I've had to do in 25yrs of soldiering.
