I did once give a guy some change when he came up to me and said, "Hey man, I'm not gonna B.S. you, I'm trying to get some money so I can get F****D up." I appreciated his honesty.
My father once had two guys in New Orleans ask for a few dollars for some beans and rice. My father said to the guys, "You aren't going to use this to buy booze, are you?" One of the guys held out a bottle and said, "No sir, we've already got booze. You want some?" My father laughed and gave them a few bucks then watched them go across the street and buy beans and rice. I smile whenever I think of that story.
My mother saw a woman in a train station with a young girl. The woman asked for a dollar so that she could buy the girl a hot dog. Immediately after giving the woman a dollar, my mother was walking away and heard the woman say to someone else, "Hey mister, can you give me a dollar so that I can buy my daughter a hot dog?"
My favorite story is one that I heard from a friend of my fathers. He said that whenever he needs yard work done, he'll ask one of those guys who has the "Will work for food" signs if he wants to do some yard work for $10 an hour. He said that every once in a while he'll get a guy who wants to work, but almost every time they say, "No. I can make more money than that just sitting here." More than $10 an hour just sitting there with a sign??? I'm in the wrong business!
