I played on sub-par teams for years...but, I played on teams. Looking at those guys that got the trophy made all of us want to step it up a notch.
We played "ringers". We were run-ruled. You know what I learned from that? There is ALWAYS a next time! And next time made up for a thousand of "last time"....even to those who lost THAT one time.
I'm not arguing for the superior team. Please understand that. Taking away the humiliation of a loss deprives the kids that got their *** whipped of the chance to get better and make it to the winner's circle. That is always the story in sport. Someone that faced the odds or bounced back from disappointment.
You only get better when you get yer *** whipped and learn that the game is won by those who have a will to win. There is always going to be a better team....you just have to be the better team that day.
There have ALWAYS been ringers. You have to look past that and get determined and if we deprive these kids of that lesson, we have all lost something, in the long run.
You can't shield yer little darlings from disappointment. Did "Bad News Bears" teach us nothing??? The lesson is stepping up to the plate and not backing down, even if you are going to get yer *** whipped.
I am on a tear here because just today, I asked my Niece where her trophy was for winning a league championship in softball.
"They don't give trophies any more." , was the response.
They couldn't afford to give them to everyone....so no one gets one, including the actual winners. How messed up is that????
In nine years of little league, I won exactly ONE trophy. We were last a few times, played for three that we lost, and won ONE. That ONE was the chase all along. Could have been four...could have been zero. The life lessons along the way make me feel ****ed that these kids are missing out on all of that.
