There's a new "reality" show on SyFy called Hollywood Treasures that features the people from Profiles in History digging up movie props and memorabilia for their auctions. Has anyone else seen this?
I watched two episodes last night and came away kind of disappointed. I mean, I liked looking at the stuff they dug up (the artwork for FF#12 was cool), but the whole show just seemed so contrived and fake that it was completely off-putting. It also struck me as weird that all the women that work for the company (on camera, anyway) look like models.
One scene showed the owner flying to New York to see a Frankenstein six-sheet owned by the guy that owns Metropolis Comics, who ended up not wanting to sell after he was told it was worth $2-3 million. I just have a hard time believing 1.) these guys didn't know each other already and 2.) that the owner of Profiles in History would fly to New York not knowing that the poster guy didn't want to sell it. Just seemed pre-arranged.
Another fake scene was when one of the women on the show arranged for a costume from Stargate to be auctioned, but they had to authenticate it by having the actor that wore it take a look at it. Naturally, they have him come in and say "Oh, I'm not sure this is real," then they break for commercial, then they come back and he says, "Wait, I recognize this! It's real!" Fake drama.
The auctions themselves are interesting except for the constant cutting back to the owner who pumps his fist and says "YES!" every time something sells.
It was just odd because no one on the show seemed very likable, either... maybe I'm just biased against rich people or something.
Anyone else watch this and come away with the same thoughts?
