That's an interesting auction since they can't even confirm which movie it came from or if that particular outfit was actually shot in the film. Was it just one of the extras that never got used or does this original owner even know? How do we know he didn't get scammed? Gee, with all of the talented artists out there making reproduction mock ups, I would want something pretty definitive telling me where this came from before I lay down any serious cash for it.

just read that this did not sell as the bidding never even got to the reserve on it...what do you think, is the market for Star Wars dead at this point? Market saturation?

the suit was not as Christies described. It was not all original, not all screen used. Verrry shady circs.

Sales of items like this seem to be dependent upon proof of authenticity. If it didn't have the documentation and there's too much doubt, it's worth little more than an cool replica.

What's really interesting about this, is the fact that Lucasfilm themselves, surprisingly didn't keep the stuff cataloged very well at all. I remember one of the things that struck me most, the first time I was up there was the "archives" were literally stuff just piled everywhere and thrown around. Stuff was banged up, rotting away, and collecting dust. None of it was either in the condition you'd think it to be in, nor kept in the order you would think. The stuff they had "sprinkled" around the halls, offices, and so forth, which were mostly miniatures, were in glass cases and looked a bit better taken care of, but for some reason, at least to me, the stuff wasn't shown the respect or reverence I thought it deserved.

Granted, this was back in the 90's. I'm sure things have changed since, but I'll never forget how haphazardly all that stuff was thrown around in there. Stormtrooper parts, C3-PO parts, a lightsaber here, a Han Solo blaster there. Just sitting on a table, gathering dust. An original Yoda puppet, decaying very badly on a makeshift, wooden stand... Forever emblazoned in my memory, like some Orwellian mix of a dark nightmare and the sweetest daydream you've ever had that didn't involve naked women.

I was shocked at how poor shape some of the stuff that was used in the travlling museum display. darth vader suit had electrical tape on parts to hold parts together, models had dust issues ... I'm sure they were afraid to clean them up due to maybe breaking something. I spotted where one of the model ships had been repaired.

seems to me if the suit was battered and damaged it's more likely to be real LOL. Also I remember a few cases where items that were real that were to be auctioned off ended up having to be returned to Lucasfilm due to the fact it was looked at as being stolen.

There are so many pieces from movies that you'd think would have been preserved, but haven't. Look at Bruce from Jaws. The original, screen-used sharks, plus the molds have been destroyed. The only thing we have left is the one that was made from the same mold, which had been left out in a back lot and the then-owner of the scrapyard picked him up and put him on display. At one point, it had been on display in one of the theme parks, and for reasons unknown, they replaced it with a completely different kind. One of the Orca ships was left out in the elements, and fans ended up coming along and breaking off pieces.
It really doesn't surprise me that Lucasfilm didn't take the time to store and catalog everything properly. It's fortunate that some of the perfomers got a few of the original stunt sabers and costume pieces - those were probably taken better care of than anything else.
