I had to go to my bank to get them to do a transfer, and they charged me $40 to do it.

Oh, and then the seller told me I owed him $7 more because the value of the Euro had risen. He had already sent the item and left feedback, so I ignored him.

You do have to go to your local branch because international wire transfers require a signature witnessed by a bank representative.

Bank transfers are easy, common and cheap (or free) in Europe, but an expensive PITA here. Europeans usually don't know that though. I don't know how many times I've been asked to accept a bank transfer from a European buyer for something I sold (which would result in my bank charging me $5-10 dollars for receiving a $10 or $20 dollar transfer. Yeah, that's worth it.

I guess that's the only reason us Europeans are still allowed here on the Museum... to help you Americans out

Bill, PM me your problem and I'll try to help. I can send a bank transfer (for free) from my bank and you can paypal me back
I've done this a couple of times already for other members

Thomas, on Ebay auctions in Europe, are bank transfer payments more common than Paypal ones? If one does pay through a transfer, is there any way to get your money back if the seller tries to rip you off. I'm just curious on how these work.

In Canada we have a bank transfer system called Certapay. It allows you to send money to anyone in Canada with an email address and who does web banking with one of the major Canadian banks (I think it only costs 50 cents per transaction, which is reasonable). I've done it a few times and it works really well. It would be cool to see a system like that in the US, but I guess they just have too damn many different banks to get something like that organized.

Yeah, bank transfer payments are very common here. It's safe, fast, reliable and you don't need proof of payment or anything afterwards. I've never had to get my money back because a seller tried to rip me off, so I don't know if there's a way of getting your money back. You could ask your bank I guess, but they'd probably want some proof that your claim is legit, like a police report or something

Thomas, you friggin' rule. I'm waiting for a total at the moment. I'll PM you when I hear back from the seller.
Maybe it's a safety issue that banks don't let Americans do overseas transfers, we're stupid enough to fall for all those damn Nigerian scams still to this day.
