They are a really cool thing to collect, so far I have about six players. These players consist of two stereo units, a portable 8 track player and three car stereos.

I noticed that any punk 8 tracks seem to be the rarest, although others can sell for over a hundred dollars each.
Yes, punk on 8 track is pretty sought after. I think most of the Sire releases were available on 8 track (Ramones, Richard Hell, Television etc. etc). Also, proto punk stuff like the Stooges, MC5 are available on 8 track and also highly collected. A friend of mine has a Velvet Underground 8 track (white light white heat, I think) which would command some attention from collectors.

Also, it seems that 8 tracks from the final years of production are quite rare. Believe it or not, the majors were still manufacturing 8 tracks well into the mid 80s but I think were only available via record clubs and whatnot--making many of them pretty hard to find.

Oh yeah, also look for Quad 8 tracks--they are in much more demand compared to their regular stereo counterparts....

The vast majority of 8 tracks, however, are virtually free for the taking with little to no value at all!

I have a few from the mid 80's, I am expecting a few Ramones 8 tracks in the mail within the next few days.

I have three quads The Guess who, Seals and Crofts and a Jefferson Airplane one.

Do you collect any 8 track tapes? The carts from the mid 60's are also worth a bit, these carts had a different designed case. They normally sell on ebay for well over $35 each.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the last new popular rock album to be released on 8-track was George Harrison's Cloud Nine -- and I think it was only available through a mail order record club making it crazy rare.

Like I said, i'm not 100% sure, but I think I heard that.

I know that the new Cheap trick album was released on 8 track. I was lucky enough to be able to purchase one.

I don't collect them, but when I see them at thrift stores I look for bands that I like. I pretty much never find any good ones though.
Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.

I'm glad you are collecting them so I don't have to. They are great and it'd be fun to collect, especially if I could talk my wife into installing a player in the car. I remember my Dad's Mac Davis/Gordon Lightfoot/Willie Nelson 8 tracks and my cousins Queen 8 tracks.

I put a Three Dog Night 8 track in my custom Mego Lost Dharma Van.
