This week's episode of Community

Anybody else notice the storyline taking place entirely in the background of scenes, involving Abed, a pregnant girl, and her estranged boyfriend, culminating in Abed delivering the baby in the parking lot?

This week's episode was the one where the girls were raising money for the oil spill and Pierce's mother died.

I'm not sure if this is a one-off thing or a new thing or if they have been doing this when characters don't have much to do in an episode.

Has anyone noticed other background storylines like this one on Community?

I've watched every episode since the premier. It seems to get better every episode.

Can't really recall any hidden sub-plots, but then again, I have trouble remembering what I had for dinner...
DVR'd last night's and am just about to watch it.

Now I gotta rewatch it, I was busy talking while it was on so while I noticed Abed doing stuff I didn't put it together with the 3 regular stories going on. I did however have stupid Betty White spoil Inception for me. Boooh!

When I watched it live to air, I thought I spotted Abed and the pregnant girl in the first scene just before he walked into the library, but didn't clue in until the end when Shirley asked Abed what he had been up to since they hadn't seen him much. Rewatching it revealed the background story to me.

Senoir Chang's addition to the regular cast looks like a good decision. The Gollum stuff was brilliant.

I would have been upset at the loss of Chang. I still can't get over the minor character of Star Burns being played by Dino Stamatopoulos, who I didn't recognize for a whole season.

I didn't even notice the stuff with Abed in the background, I'll have to watch it again. Leave it to this show to try something different like that.

Me too. I liked it from the beginning, but during the first season, it just blossomed, came into it's own and became so much better and weirder (in a good way!). I don't think I've ever seen a show evolve and improve so much during it's first season, maybe over the course of several seasons, but not in a single season like this one did.

It appears much of the cast has an improv background and they are often letting them riff away with their characters, like the closing credits last season with Troy and Abed. It looked like Troy for example had a certain arc planned given where his character started from as an ex Jock, but perhaps they have just allowed the character to go wherever the actor brings the funny.
