To this day, my father has never expressed any interest in any musical genre....He recorded (reel to reel) tons of albums when he was stationed in Korea in the 60s of everything ranging from country to pop to opera to ballet but I believe that was more out of boredom and because it was "the thing to do". The only song associations I have with him are "Band on the Run" (which he hated because a guy at work always used to sing the line "If I ever get out of here") and "Get Back" (because he himself would quote the line "Get back Jo-Jo!"....not sure what he meant by it)

Most of my initial music tastes came from my mother's influence....until she strayed from pop/rock and went country.....Ugh

My two older sisters influenced my listening habits and live music tastes, and made me aware of all kinds of punk and alternative music from a young age
Both of 'em have more cool rock n roll stories than I can remember!!!

Casey Kasem and his "American Top 40", then as I got older Dr. Demento... my Dad was big on country and that stuck... my friends were metal heads and somewhere along the way Dean Martin touched by soul. John Lennon of course was the most thought provoking songwriter for my teen years...

My parents didn't really listen to much music and my older brothers were a lot older and didn't live with me growing up, so I think the biggest influence on me was TV and movies. I think the main movies were "Stand By Me," "Heavy Metal" and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." Blue Oyster Cult was mentioned in Fast Times and their music was in Heavy Metal, so I ended up listening to them a lot.
Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.

Definitely my mom. She must have bought every k-Tel album ever made.
Plus I remember her playing stuff like Doobie Brothers, CCR, Bee Gees, Three Dog Night, LaBelle, Linda ronstadt, Elton John...

Older step brother for metal when I was 8 or 9 (motorhead, Judas Preist). Then my older sister and her friends for punk rock and early 80's college radio type stuff (Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Ramones,The Smiths, r.e.m).

Then I discovered skateboarding and skate video's which introduced me to a whole new world of music that me and my friends had never heard of(Minutemen, Sonic Youth, Firehose)

always found reading lp liner notes and thank you lists a great way of hearing new music, often bought lp's just because certain bands took them out on tour etc.

Would also buy records based on what record label they were on, couldnt go wrong with early 90's Sub-Pop(mudhoney) or 80's SST(Husker du).
