I had the pleasure of spending a week in Merida. Wonderful experience, and perfectly safe for anyone with a lick of common sense. The locals were terrific. If one's tastes aren't too vanilla, avoid all the usual tourist-recommended places in favour of the local fare. I found the best food was in the little mom and pop hole-in-the-walls.

The ruins in that region were spectacular.

I still miss the Fresh Mango and/or grapefruit sold by elderly ladies on street corners, with a bit of lime juice and chili powder on top. I took this for granted until I arrived in Cancun and the norther cities.

Never acquired the taste for the Chili flavoured candies though.

We might hop on the bus and check out Merida on a down day, if we have any. The wife and I are headed back to Valladolid, about half way to Merida from Cancun. We stayed there last year for ten days and found all kind of stuff to get into. The hotel counter guy was really confused when we told him we were staying for over a week, I guess most of the travel is one or two nights just to see Chichen Itza. We did go to see that site, but I found it one of the more boring ruins, and over run with tourists, even at 8 am.

I happened to be at Chichen Itza during the Equinox. Wasn't planned, it was just when we were passing through from Cancun to Merida, and it was insane. I couldn't believe the crowds there to witness the appearance of the snake-shadow.

The next day we were at Dzibilchaltun at dawn, but it was pouring rain so we didn't see whatever was supposed to happen when the sun peaked through the window. Lots of locals wearing white and piles of hippies.

My favourite ruins in the region was Uxmal. The local racers actually staged an event for us that snaked 42 km along the roads that ended here, so it was with rubber legs that I hauled myself up and down the wonders at this site.

Did some great cave-diving in the Mayan Riviera as well.
