And when he got up to the top, he let go w/ one hand (on the safety line) and scratched his leg. I could never be that confident.

F%#K NO. Oh yeah now we have to go outside the cage free climb up some pegs.... Boost ourselves over the ledge to even a smaller smaller pole with pegs.. Man if you can build it that high you can either keep it enclosed or have a device that can raise or lower the last few feet of boom to be worked on....Comment

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure it comes down to cost. An elevator or hydraulic boom would increase the cost of material and engineering considerably, and then that apparatus would need to be maintained and repaired as well - maybe more often than the actual tower, lights, etc. From their perspective, I guess it's cheaper to buy liability insurance and have your tower worker sign a waiver and be well-paid. I don't know why they couldn't have an enclosure though... maybe weight and wind resistance becomes an issue the higher it is? I don't know.Comment

I used to have to crawl up antenna towers all of the time. Though, it scared the pee-waddlins out of me, it never rendered me incapable of doing the job. I suppose the same can be said for everyone who has ever done it.
The worst for me was scaling a mast on an underway ship to replace a satellite antenna. Winds aloft tend to make flat surfaces want to go airborne. Plus, there's all of the other stuff that rotates and radiates that you hope they shut off in respect to your dumb arse being up there...but there is really no way of knowing so you just ignore that.Comment

The time I did it underway, I received hostile fire pay, sea pay, and tax exempt for being in a combat zone. That translates to a lot of money, but no more than anyone else got and they didn't have to shimmy up a mast of a ship underway. That duty fell to me because I kind of found it cool. I can't say it was enjoyable, but I have always liked pushing myself and that was definitely a fear overcome.
It was worth it.Comment
