I will see all your aggressive North American drivers and raise you the city of Bangkok where I was once stranded in a traffic median for half an hour fearing for my life as cars and tuktuks made like a Mad Max movie.
Check out this poor couple.

This is a fairly typical tuktuk ride...

What?! No love for the Auto Bahn?
For the record I think that is a very dumb idea and it will eventually cause a "real" serious accident.
I just do not understand why in the H-E double hockey sticks everyone has to be in such a dog gone hurry for these days. Where is the fire? That is what I want to know. I bet if you could stop most people that drive like fools and ask them what is the hurry they probably could not give you a real justifiable legit answer to your question.
As much as it pains me to say/type this I truly believe the best defense mechanism against this kind of driving would be
A) Start putting in speed bumps.
or
B) Make it a law to place governor like devices on all the automobiles in existence. How else are they really going to stop people from speeding?
Tickets do present fines, but that alone is not cutting the mustard. It is almost like an on going joke. People just hire an attorney, get the fine reduced to a misdemeanor and speed away from the Attorney's office paying a smaller ticket amount. Barely even a slap on the hand.
It is really tough to take this kind of stand especially when someone like myself that owns, collects and loves sports cars. Hell, My Viper registers 200 MPH. Have I ever went that fast? NO! Is there REALLY a need for anyone to go over 65 MPH on a public highway?
I just do not see the logic in building cars that go way over the posted speed limit. Other than professional racing at the track as a sport. ????
I know some will disagree with this. That is good. Lets start a constructive dialog. Perhaps someone can answer my question with a reasonable answer.
Bring on the dialog and let the beatings begin....Last edited by livnxxxl; Sep 10, '10, 8:18 PM.Enjoy what you like, and let others enjoy what they like. (C) Azrak 2009

I would argue that 65 is an arbitrary number; why not 63, 68 or 72? There's obviously a trade-off between speed and safety, and people will have different opinions depending on a number of factors.
Today's cars are capable of safely going pretty fast under good conditions. I try to go 75-80 on my way to work on one particular stretch of limited-access road that is flat, straight & 4 lanes wide. Though I'm in a Mustang, I don't like the way my car feels when I'm over 82 or 83, so I make it a point to top out around 80. However, 65 feels slow to me on that road.
Coming home tonight, traffic on the same road was very heavy. I was happy to go 55-60 and get home without incident. I guess my argument is that it's all relative.Comment

I remember 2D cutouts of police in Japan. I think that was a good idea, but I am not so sure about a child, I think it could desensitize people.Comment

Exactly.
My knee-jerk reaction to this was that it could possibly desensitize people, but now that I think about it, I highly doubt that would happen--real children are usually in motion, which you can detect and react to immediately. If all children were zombies and had a habit of standing very still in the middle of streets, then I'd be more worried.
No, my real concern is that this could actually be used in some way as a legal defense in court: some reckless driver kills a child and then uses the "speed bump" defense. Stranger things have happened.
