    Popular Modern Mythology Seems Scarce

Have any of you noticed how you rarely hear about Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and all that great stuff anymore.

Seems to me that years ago every few years there would be a story about a Yeti sighting or Ogo Pogo sighting or some such thing.

You never seem to hear about that stuff anymore.

Even UFO sightings seem on the decline.

That was a lot of fun years ago.

You think the culture has become more cynical or more sophisticated or what?

Bat Boy just doesn't measure up to the old classics.

    I've noticed this decline myself. It also applies to the world of ghosts too. Things don't seem to bump in the night like they used to. Here's my take on the matter;

I'm not sure that the world has become more cynical as we really do have grand and scary things looking at us everyday in the "absolute" world. Perhaps all these real world fears have superceded any imagined or less tangible fears. I'm hard pressed to worry about a 10 foot tall apeman walking up to my campsite when I know the skinny dude who happens to sign my check may have to lock the doors to where I work any day. That point was for the sake of alagory only... all is good at TKO 8

Still it is weird, being a psuedo expert in this field, things really aren't going bump in the night like they used to and I've actually noticed that there has been a sharp decline in paranormal activities for me since 2003

Are you kidding? Practically every channel has some sort of "ghost hunters" show now.

It was a better day when we had to worry about the likes of the Boggy Creek Monster coming through our bathroom window!

It's to hard to fake them anymore, the video equipment has risen so far the pics and footage can be easily proven to be fake. That's what I think anyway.

                  Hmmm,
I think society in general have gotten so obsessed with computers and computer related "hobbies" nobody cares about anything else anymore.

Back in the 70's it was actually quite boring, so the occassional Bigfoot or Bermuda triangle story went a lot further than it would today.

                    Hmmmm....

You guys are looking in the wrong places; there are TONS of shows about weird stuff nowadays. Celebrity Ghost Stories, A Haunting, Monster Quest, Ghost Academy, one where they do reconstructions of legendary monsters, UFO Hunter, one where they have celebrities looking for ghosts, The Nostradamus Effect.... and that's just off the top of my head. You can probably find a lot of psychics/spiritualists around your town too. Tons of websites.... it's everywhere!

....which is fitting, 'cos it IS the 70's again. For a couple more years, anyhoo.

Good call, I agree with you on this. Always too busy typing into some sort of device they do not need

Yeah, I agree that you don't hear as much about the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot, but I've actually read more about UFO sightings over the last 10 years than before. And the Ghost hunters thing certainly seems to have exploded (although not very convincingly). Actually, now that I think about it, it seems like the difference isn't that there aren't as many "Monster" stories. The difference is that now it's scientists telling us about deep sea creatures long thought to have been extinct with photos to go along with the news and very factual info or Professional Paranormal Investigators with machines and devises explaining ghosts in a more clinical and scientific manner. The "Monster" stories are still there, it's just the presentation isn't as mysterious.
Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.

imo, the myths are just all bs and investigation and modern technology has disproved all of it.

Except UFO's I do believe there is life out there, I'm not sure if they have found us yet or not though.

Yeah - I'm also surprised you guys have missing the stuff - it's around for sure! Paranormal movies and shows seem to be at an all time high to me - especially ghosts, psychics and demons.

I do think that a great number of people who are interested in these paranormal ideas are perhaps spending a little bit less time on the classics and devoting more time to trendier phenomena like 2012 predictions and all types of mystical healing.

It's there. My opinion is that the explosion of cable channels and the internet, etc has just made it appear to be less. In fact, I believe there's actually more than back in the day, you just have to wade through so much extra stuff now to find it.
