I need an opinion. I have a 94 Ford Probe GT, which I have driven daily for the last 10 years ever since I bought it. I love this car and am torn between slowly restoring it or getting rid of it when and buying something else. My Dad thinks I'm nuts, but I know I can get a high performance motor for it with around 40,000 miles on it that puts out an extra 40 horses for $1000. What would you do?

Not easy to answer. To be honest if you want a car with some HP then buy a Mustang GT 5.0. Parts are cheap and easily available. Of course Camaros and TAs will also work if you want GM. If you are emotionally attached to the Probe then keep it and do as you like but remember that it is highly unlikely you will get much return on your investment.
So really it is an answer that you need to decide. I have restored (the upholstery part) many cars that the owners spent far more restoring then the vehicles were worth but again it was special to them for one reason or another.

If you like the car, then go ahead and get it back into shape. Should be easy to get back into great shape as I'm sure interior parts are easy to find.
Dropping a motor in that is easy.
Then just move through the whole car, trans service, suspension etcComment

I agree with Zemo here. It's not a hard fix and if you love the car that much, then you WOULD be crazy to let it go. When it comes to cars and your ability to fix them, follow your heart if the price tag is not too high. $1000 is nothing.Comment

HOLY COW! That must be the last running one on the planet!
Seriously though, I work for Ford and those were not good cars. I used to shudder every time one would come in for service. I was so glad the day they stopped making them.
You must've got one of the few good ones.
Get a new Mustang to replace it!

Is that Probe GT a 6cyl .....or a 5.0 V8?? I've seen some V8 5.0 conversions in the past that ran pretty quick on the street.
40hp for a $1000 motor swap??? You can get more HP for cheaper by using Nitrous. Typically you can pick up a good used "sniper" or "Cheater" kit for $200-$300 with a bottle. You could easily spray a 50-75hp shot on that car without harming it....provided the kit is set up by someone who knows what they're doing with nitrous and tuning.
Just some food for thought.....Comment

I'm realy more interested in swapping the engine because the current one is pushing 200,000, the extra horsepower is just a bonus. It's a fun car to drive, not super fast with the V6 but quick enoughto have some fun on hte highway.
Thanks for the input guys, I think I'll keep working on and decide on the motor swap when and if the current engine wears out. It's a 5 speed manual transmission, if it were an automatic I wouldn't even bother as those transmissions fail far too often.Comment
