    Beanie babies $.50

I was at the flea market and saw laundry baskets of these. Still bagged & tagged. Not just McDonalds ones either.

In my Nelson ( Bart Simpsons bully?) voice I say :

    " Ahh HA!"

From a company standpoint Beanie Babies was great gimmick for a company to break into the grown women market.

Of course any NEW collectible is bound to dive sooner or later, but the Beanie Baby company were the real winners in all of this.

We cleaned out my daughter's old toy box recently and sold her old Beanie Babies. She got $36.00 for over 100 of the damned things. We had fun buying them back in the day, but I was glad to see them go. I always felt sorry for the poor schmucks who were spending thousands on the early Beanies, thinking they were gonna get rich.

Let Beanies be a lesson to anyone who collects things with the thought that they are going to go up in price and you will make lots of money.

In my opinion the real problems with Beanie Babies started when the comic book guys, sports cards dealers and action figure scalpers started to take notice.

You then started to see the stereotypical seedly looking coin, comic, action figure and sports card dealers scalping them and having overpriced piles of them at shows and fleamarkets. They staked out Halmark stores and constantly striped the shelves clean. I'm not kidding. I saw them. They'd hang out at the stores on shipping days and pester the sales girls at the card shops unmercifully. It got really bad.

My Mom collected them for a while. They were cute, inexpensive (at first) and took up very little room. She got sick of not finding the ones she wanted and the scalper prices and stopped collecting them. She eventually donated her collection to Goodwill.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I don't think I ever would have given any thought to them one way or another if it hadn't been for the fact that they ended up in the collectables market. I actually think the product itself is a fine product. They're not my cup of tea, but I can see how other people would like them. I think it's there overexposure than left a bad taste in my mouth.
