I just finished watching the Shootist. What a great film that was. John Wayne was a true American legend. They don't make men like him anymore...or if they do, this country wouldn't appreciate him.
Loved all the movies the Duke made even the campy early ones....The Cowboys was one of my all time favorite movies...never could look at Bruce Dern without thinking "Your the creep who shot John Wayne in the back"...lol
The Shootest and the Cowboys are fine Wayne Westerns. I'd also suggest Red River, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and perhaps the greatest Western ever committed to film, The Searchers.
When I first started watching classics, Wayne wasn't one of my favorites, but once I started watching his stuff, he quickly became a favorite of mine. I don't know if he's the coolest, but he's certainly one of a kind.
John Wayne isn't anyone I would have wanted to know or hang out with - in either his movies or real life - but you can't deny he's entertaining to watch.
