Music used to be mostly about music...Great songwriting that spoke to the soul. Now it seems like a 20 week career for lip syncing stage dancers who couln't play any instrument more complicated than a tamborine if they were at gunpoint.

music has always had those gimmicky stars, but man I know what Megotu means ... it's nothing BUT! gimmicky stars now. Yeah ctc is right about the 50's singers they're a dime a dozen and you can see them on the OPB old farts still try to sing specials, most come out for their one song people remember then go take their nap LOL LOL.

But what made the 50's 60's 70's 80's and even part of the 90's are the few who became true stars and music icons, Elvis, Buddy Holly, jimmi hendrix, Michael Jackson, and many others.

It's simply the establishment trying to maintain some symbolism of control over the entertainment industry. The days of manufactured talent are pretty much done. The internet has opened the door to any and everybody who has a touch of talent and the ability to work the "new marketing model". I do believe we are at the greatest paradigm in the history of entertainment, information and education that the world has seen so far.

It's not just music, it is everything from news to soft drinks. Nothing has a local feel anymore.

It seems like everything flows from a central source. Pop Music used to be varied when there was DooWop on the East Coast, Motown in Detroit, Rockabilly in the South, and Surf Rock on the West Coast. All of these styles were going on at the same time.

It used to be fun to travel and take in different things as you passed from Region to Region, but now it is all pretty much the same from Coast to Coast. Maybe that has it's good points, but I really feel that we have lost something along the way.

I totally agree. Trying to keep a local feel alive is what I'm trying to do here at the station I work at but honestly the general population doesn't really care all that much. Sure, a lot of folks talk about wanting more local stuff, a better sense of community, etc... but when it comes down to it most folks are perfectly content with the generic run of the mill product that is spoon fed to everyone because it's easy. Case and point; a lot of downtown areas complain about Wal-Mart but they refuse to make themselves a little more competitive. You can't keep store hours of 9 to 5 Monday through Friday and expect people to come to you just because your local.

Guess I should say all the stuff they play nonstop on the radio LOL, I know there are some great bands and real talent out there now, it's just so much crap that is shoved in our faces.

My Dad and I just had this conversation a couple of weeks ago.

Not only has Wal-Mart emerged, nationally, but most Mom's work from 9-5 and that was not the case 30 years ago. 9-5, Monday though Friday was okay when you had a significant portion of the population that could shop during those hours. Regardless, Saturday was always the busiest time in those days because stores were open and downtowns were packed with shoppers. Not anymore.....because those stores have decided to compete with Wal-Mart by closing on Saturdays when they were open in the past. They can blame Wal-Mart, but some of the problem was their unwillingness to adapt and compete in a new paradigm. I'm not proposing it is as simple as all that, but they didn't even try to change with the times.

But yeah; there IS a lot of good stuff out there, you just have to go looking. The radio has ALWAYS been a wasteland. I don't know if that's new though: we've always had a huge underground music scene around here (Essex county/Detroit) and bootlegs, self pressings, passed around tapes served the same role online does now.
