generic - was that movie called "The Day After"? That movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid!

Yeah, that's exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. You look at that or Peter Duesberg's AIDS denial kick or James Watson's racist ramblings from a year or so ago...

Sometimes smart people - no matter how smart they are - do think foolish things. Science works when scientists follow scientific method, are peer reviewed and theories are accepted by a consensus - because no who it is a single person is fallible without that process.

Stephen Hawking is fantastic - and I don't think his argument is really foolish - I just think it would be stronger if he stuck to his field siting specific stats and established research.

He's not even the first physicist I've heard talking about our survival depending on space colonization, but I haven't seen their opinions in mainstream press like this. Hawking is in a unique place, because along with his scientific authority he comes with the authority of celebrity too - and celebrities getting attention for their theories REALLY drives me crazy.

I'm certainly more critical of the media here than Hawking, in any case. He's sensationalizing the issue a little and he could have used better examples for his point - in my opinion.

The eugenics thing - I should have been a lot clearer: Years ago Hawking was at a lecture and warning about the survival mankind (he loves to do that) and how our future depends on increasing our IQs enough to deal with the problems of the future - and he spoke kind of generally about genetics and the need to increase IQ --- his critics pointed out that the relationship between what he was saying was not incompatible with eugenics. I'm not sure how much attention the criticism or his original statements got - I'm remembering from maybe 10 years ago. If I find some links I'll PM you!

His advice is sound. Lets not put all our eggs in one basket. We should be colonizing the solar system. There's still a chance an undetected asteroid could hit the Earth and wipe us out. Astronomers detected another Asteroid impact at Jupiter recently. We didn't see that coming. Hawking's reasons are not too far fetched either. A plague or use of Nuclear weapons could kill us all pretty quick.

Still, this is not a science website. Just look at the headlines next to his: Baby comes to life in coffin? C'mon!

Hawking's opinions are as good (or bad) as any other human on Earth.

Quite simple actually. There are people out there that have more money than brains. It really shows every time they pay outrageous prices for something when they could have gotten a better deal on it had they have waited and used common sense.

The Earth will end when it is time for it to end. I really do not think that this is anything any of us here on Earth can really control.

Yeah, I think that was the name of the movie. That was actually what I was thinking when I posted yesterday, but I wasn't sure so I left it out.

Speaking of Steven Hawking, I was always meaning to ask this ....

He was born in England, went to school in England and lives in England ....

My question is, why does his robo-voice speak with an American Accent ?

Depends what company had the robo-voice tech to give to him. Must'a been American.

The Mayan's did not think the world is going to end in 2012. That's just Hollywood fearmongering. The Mayan calender does not end on December 31 2012. It's just the end of one long count period and another imediately starts.

There is also no cataclysmic planatary alignment coming. Heck every December the Earth and our sun align with the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. It happens every year. It doesn't mean anything or cause anything bad to happen.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Thanks for the info. That sure is a relief to know. For a minute there I thought it was time to sell off all of my Mego's before D day.
