    Wrestling with Megos

Okay, so I told Fletcher (my eight-year-old son) that I once turned all my Megos into wrestlers and, using a shoddy wooden wrestling ring that my then-step-father put together, created a Mego wrestling federation and held matches, and he's been after a ring ever since to do the same.

I remembered I had a Paco Magnificent Wrestler ring in the garage so I got it out and put it together, along with two Paco wrestlers to add to his collection.

BTW, the Mego in the Famous Covers Iron Man mask and Barack Obama jacket and tie is actually the Mattel retro Batman playing the role of referee! I've since made him an actual referee - vintage Scotty Mego with CTVT referee shirt and tan pants - though I think he might still like Iron Barack Batman better.

Here he is playing with them:

I kept record books of all my matches as a kid. I still have them, like 4-5 spiral notebooks full. Yes, I was (and still am) a nerd.

back in the 70s,i use to watch portland wrestling, and of course my megos had matches for the pacific northwest title, the apes were mostly the pnw champion, zaius, corneilus, and the gorillas, but thor and conan were tough, the only photos i still have of the matches are pnw ladies champ nature-girl dinah-mite.who we didnt play with much,in fact i still have all my original megos, and dinah still has her home made pnw ladies title belt,an isis waist band with plates glues on.the man title is long gone, the weird thing was that the mego women can do almost all the holds and did not break

Get your son one of Mattel´s newest Real Scale rings. He will love it! I have three of them and have Wargames battles all the time. And yes, I am 38 years old...What of it?

It turns out we might not sell the Monster Cafe. Have to think about it. The real estate lady is taking MUCHO tiempo deciding what to do. She is dragging her feet.

I desperately want the Mattel WWE figures.

Sorry...I am ranting...It is 1 am in Mexico at my bar....

I've met the lead sculptor on those, he's a really cool guy - super down-to-eath. The series looks great, too.

I still remember the wrestling tournament I had with all my Megos. The only rule was the figure could not use its super power.

To this day I remember Robin beating Hulk for the belt.

Think B.A. Where did you hide the Megos?

I did the same thing as a kid. Intruder was always my champ.

I turned all my Megos into wrestlers as a kid, taking away their super heroes and giving them new identities. Capt. Kirk was Jason Andrews, my perennial world champ. He was taller than most of his competitors, accomplished by putting his feet in Robin shoes and then shoving them into CHIPs boots! Robin became fan favorite "The Coyote" and, it was later revealed, heel Greg Dawson's (another Robin) brother. Luke Duke was "Cowboy" Bob Dodge, Bo Duke was Ric Spencer, Bones McCoy was "Blackjack" Thomas, Superman was his nephew Matt Thomas. Sitting Bull was Robert Fernandez. Fonzie was Rex Randolph, Jason Andrews' brother, who had changed his last name because he didn't want to ride on the coattails of his brother's success. And speaking of brothers, I also had "Gentleman" Corey Thornton and Craig Thornton, both Coy Dukes. Oddly, they weren't identical twins, though they looked exactly alike. A Flash Gordon body with a Potsie head wearing a mask became The Colossus, my heel version of Andre the Giant. I also "re-purposed" Hulk and Thing bodies. I think Thing had a Chopper head, and Hulk a Spock head. They were "The Smash Brothers." Conan, minus his hair (yes, I cut it all off!) was The Reaper. Ponch was martial arts master The Black Dragon. Starsky doubled as veteran wrestler David Crews and his son (Starsky head on a Fonzie body) strongman Justin Crews. I had a bunch of others, but I can't seem to remember their names.

I can't believe I still remember most of their names, though! My wrestling federation was the NWF - National Wrestling Federation. It was pretty much modeled after the NWA at the time. I had a world title, world tag titles, US title, US tag titles, and a TV champion, I think. The title belts were sometimes old wristwatches that, with masking tape, I turned into belts. And I remember two Mego Batman belts were my US tag titles.

Here's some photos I took of them, from... yikes, something like 30 years ago!!
