Other than being about dumb losers drinking and acting stupid, the next worst part is that almost none of them are even from New Jersey! I think all but 2 of them are from NY, hell I read Snookie is from upstate NY.
So no this does not represent NJ!

People care because these are real people... Although most reality shows, especially with how popular they've become, are kind of "staged", people watch because the cast of these shows, however stupid or shallow, are more of a realistic representation of themselves. It's much more of a stretch for someone to aspire to be like Russel Crowe as Maximus or Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, than it is to be like Snookie or one of those bimbo wife chix.
American culture has become so obsessed with fame, that the idiots who watch these shows, whether consciously or subconsciously, look at the people in reality shows as something they can easily achieve-- They look at that stupid Snookie chick and think "Look how dumb she is-- If SHE'S on TV, then the idea of me being on TV is possible." These lame people will never be Russel Crowe, or Batman, or Salt or whatever, but anybody can become famous on a reality show without a modicum of talent whatsoever.
It's the next evolution of the dumbing down of our nation and making everybody feel "special". It's like the networks are saying; "Hey look people, they're just like you! They have the same problems, the same whatever. It's ok if you're a shallow loser like they are, because that's what we want you to be... Now take your stimilus check and go buy a flatscreen TV to watch the show on!"
I shudder at the thought of where it will go from here...
