Question about cleaning a flat screen monitor

My nephew gave me an older flat screen monitor 15" dell

He salvaged it out of the trash and got it working

Problem is the screen is kind of dirty.

I'm a little afraid to clean it because it's made of plastic or something ... Reminds me of a gameboy screen.

Can I clean it using my eye glasses spray bottle cleaner ?
It's made for plastic eye glass lenses.

Problem is it looks like the previous owner smoked and there's yellow tobacco gunk all over it.
Water does nothing but smear it.
      Tried that already

Seriously your eye glass cleaner is fine or a 50/50 alcohol/water mix. Since it was taken out of the bin and these don't work, go to Windex straight on the soft cloth.

I've discovered hydrogen peroxide to work great on screens. It's not abrasive, it fizzes the gunk, and leaves it streak free.

They also sell containers of "handy-wipe" type moistened wipes that are made just for cleaning LCD screens -- you should be able to find them at electronics stores, and I've even seen them at Wal-mart.

Or 220-grit wet-dry sandpaper (wet of course)

On Zemo's word I tried the eye glass cleaner.

                Worked fine -- thanks

                BTW,
I tried the computer moistened handy wipes already ... They didn't work.
                Wouldn't cut through the yellowing

yea, when you have a real dirty lcd don't be scared to pull out all the stops. Windex on a cloth will work just don't do it a lot as it will fk the screen up. For casual cleaning just water and a soft cloth. Medium eye glass or 50/50 h20-alcohol.

Same difference as it makes sleeping in an unwashed hotel bed ... why have it washed ahead of time, you're only going to dirty it again anyway
