Geez, why does EVERYTHING have to depend on movies?? Remember when comic companies were just that? I mean, they have toys, too. It really sucks that our society can't do anything w/o sitting in front of a screen of some sort; (TV, computer, Iphones, movies). Merchandise back in the day depended on comics, and maybe radio and TV. But the COMICS were the thing."Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true." -
>why does EVERYTHING have to depend on movies??
That’s where the money is.
>Remember when comic companies were just that?
Thing is; Marvel and DC AREN’T just comic companies: the comic part is attached to a huge conglomerate. Back in the day they WERE just comic companies: if the movie did well, Marvel didn’t pocket anything extra ‘cos after they licensed the character off they had nothing to do with the film/tv show/toy/whatever.
>Merchandise back in the day depended on comics,
Not really. That’s why Hulk had a helicopter.
I’ve always been a fan of comics; it’s the last medium where one person can run the whole shebang. (Especially nowadays, with the print on demand and such.) The entertainment by committee thing never sat well with me, and Marvel and DC always had a touch of it. But the decision makers were still in-house. Nowadays they’re in a different company, only seeing the returns. And the movies are currently where it’s at.

Agreed the loss of Jobs would be the worst part. It does looks as though DC is feeling the sting , Of Marvel's film success. I always viewed Marvel and DC differently anyways. DC always had that darker tone than Marvel , and that maybe partly Why Marvel's characters have translated better to film and TV. Since DC always felt darker , the campy attempts on the characters always seemed to not feel right. The evolution has been odd to just look at the batman Tv/Movies...
Batman 60's TV Series (campy)
Batman 1989 Film ( dark)
Batman returns (dark)
Then back to campy ....
Batman forever
Batman & Robin
Then back to dark...
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
My point is they don't ever have a clear direction for the characters and seem to stick with it. I don't read comics much and haven't in over 15 years , but from what i hear even the DC Universe(S) are a mess. All kinds of continuity issues. In The " Real World " Vampires Do Not Sparkle. They Burn In the Sun !

I don't see that article reflecting the end to comics. If anything it's just another way to generate revenue for comics. Warner is just essentially saying it's time for DC to get competitive and I couldn't agree more. Heroes are product. And at no time in history have heroes become a bigger property for big budget films. This is the golden years for comic book heroes on film and DC needs to make sure their property is properly recognized.Comment

The comics should rightly last forever. As the original source medium they will inevitably incorporate and mesh with other media, from TV to movies to web based content and everything in between, but comics should and will always remain the cornerstone of the iconic DC characters.PUNY HUMANS!Comment

Movies has always been what these two companies wanted, that for them was the Golden ticket and only at one point DC/Warner were able to do it. Marvel finally caught up and now is going full throttle.
Movies capture a Giant audience that comics never were able to. DC is just crying because all they've really been able to put out are Batman movies (Sorry Superman returns sucked)while Marvel is pumping their characters whether it's hit or miss. Yeah DC can talk a lot of Bullcrap but
so far Marvel movies have them beat hands down........Last edited by kingdom warrior; Jul 22, '10, 11:01 AM.Comment

I think AJ Collector's concern is that DC Comics will move to LA? Three of the main players are Left coasters (Nelson, Johns and Jim Lee).Comment

It's basically just taking a page out of Disney's bag of tricks. The characters are already there, there is a built in audience, and just another way to generate revenue for the company.
I have always been a Spider-Man fan. The movies didn't make stop reading the comics. The sucky story lines stopped me from reading the current comics."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."

That was my understanding as well. DC may very well pack up the NYC offices and move everything to LA. Those not willing nor offered to move would be out of a job.Think OUTSIDE the Box! For the BEST in Repro & Custom Packaging!Comment
