"You Know!", It Drives Me Crazy

Jennifer Lopez was just on Letterman looking fine as always, but she has the "You Know" bug.

Almost every sentence starts or ends with "You know" and it makes me want to throw something at the TV. This has become common in mainstream talk these days. All the Hollywood trash kids do it, Paris (don't start a thread on her again) Hilton is even worse with it.

The "Like" phase is pretty much gone, but it was just as bad. I guess it is like the valley girl talk and preppy talk of the 80's.

(The "like" I used in the last sentence was used properly, so don't try it )

A six year old in my class has recently picked up the "like" habit. It drives me NUTS!

I'm guilty of both the "you know" and the "umm" but I don't use them to excess. I also use "like" a little too much, but my downfall is calling guys "man" or "dude".

Very funny! Actually it's a boy, Max. And he can't get through a sentence w/o using "like" at least twice.

Whatever happened to "said"? All I hear now is, "He goes…" or "She's like…"

At least "man" and "dude" are neutral. People who constantly call strangers "pal" or "buddy" make me feel like I'm about to get robbed.

The pal/buddy comment made me laugh. When I purchased my first car, I took my dad along to help me look over the car and help negotiate the price for me. The negotiations broke down within 30 seconds of closing the deal because my dad insisted that the tires be replaced as part of the deal. We were leaving and the used car salesman ran up yelling "hold on pal". That really angered my dad.

Sometimes at work there is always someone who wants to call me "guy"...either they don't know my name or choose not to remember it. I would rather them just say "Hi" as I'm passing them in the hallway rather than "hey guy".

As far as the Umms and you knows, I learned in a Dale Carnegie speech class years ago that it is fairly common for people to use it as a way to fill in empty space as they are collecting their thoughts. People who are speaking (especially public speaking) do not like uncomfortable silences as they try to regather their thoughts so it is not unusual to use umm, you know, and like as a space filler. I used to use "umm" a lot when I gave presentations at work and it was a habit that I made a conscious effort to break. Now if I lose my train of thought, I just remain quiet for a few seconds until I recollect my thoughts.
