Story records, with books or without?

A lot of us grew up listening to story records or tapes as kids. I had maybe 3 w/ books (and one was a 45 w/ the same story on an album version I had), and the rest didn't have books. Growing up, I found that I liked the ones w/o records better, b/c I liked using my imagination more than looking at pics in a book, (which half the time, didn't match up to the pics in my head). I guess that's why as an adult, I like old radio shows so much.

Anyway, did you like using the books w/ the story records, or your imagination?

If I had the books, I had to use them, but now I can appreciate both ways. I like the stories that do describe things more like a radio program so that you can tell what's going on.
    It's all good!

I always tended to read along using the books, particularly the ones where there was an audio cue on the record/tape to get you to turn the page.

I used to record the records (from the book & record set) on a cassette tape and cut out all the "turn the page" and "turn the record over" prompts. I also used to make my own recordings for Archie comics on tape and then I would read them to my tape like a book & record. I also did all the voices...
I still have a couple of those tapes.

LOVED the record/book combos as a kid. It was really something of a treat back in those days since television only offered four channels. I had many of the "Power" records that featured the Hulk, F.F., and my favorite, Conan. What was neat was they were actual issues from the comics. But if you want to get a record that would feed your imagination, you should try and get a copy of the album - "Famous monsters speak". Here's a link for reference...

FAMOUS MONSTERS SPEAK vinyl LP Frankenstein Dracula AA - eBay (item 230420941452 end time Aug-04-10 10:34:48 PDT)

They also have it on CD now but for some reason they want your rear to buy it since it's out of print. I prefer the album anyway. Sounds more authentic hearing it through the needle. You might think something like that would be very quaint by today's standards, but it actually holds up really well. Very much in the same vein as those classic stories told on the CBS Radio Mystery Theater.

I had a bunch of the Power Records vinyls as a kid, too. Still have a few of the Super Heroes ones. Great stuff.
