A storm knocked out my reception last night. Did anyone see how much they valued that guys transformers collection? He was asking 20,000 for the whole lot, and I was curious to see how much he got.

The expert they brought in said $18K-$20K, so the seller was pretty much bang-on in his estimate. The pawn guy offered something like $6K and wouldn't go above $10K because he felt it would take too much time to part the whole thing out to sell.
That was a wild-huge collection, though, wasn't it? and I don;t think I would just store/display them in rows on the floor -- I suppose maybe that was for the show, but somehow, I get the feeling that was just how hw kept them.
My son's been into Transfomers sinc he was 2 (12 years now) and he was blown away by what that guy had! -
They brought in an "expert" who placed the collection's value at 20K (which legitimized the guy's price), as long as each piece was sold individually. Rick offered the guy $5K, since that would be a labor intensive process for him. The guy turned him down. I think Rick then upped the offer to $10K, and the guy declined that too. No deal, they shook hands and left.Comment

Thanks for the update. I'm amazed the guy hasn't tried to sell them on E-bay. I guess he wanted them all gone in one quick sale

How is the market for vintage Transformers these days? Most older toy lines I'm familiar with (TFs not being one of them) have tanked pretty hard on the aftermarket the last few years. Have 80s Transformers maintained strong values?Comment
-
it is still a very strong market the thing with TF is the loose collectors are very intersted in the variaitons and mold changes as much as the chracters, That would explain why he had so many versions of some characters beyond just the big changes (major color changes or Prime g1 to headmaster to g2). It;s actually odd to me that all the reissues haven't hurt value in G1 but the collectors of TF are that dedicated
the real value would have been in a MIB collection. I assume the guy didn't want to take the effort to sell em himself piecemealComment

Its strong enough to support a Transformers con in Toronto this weekend. RAH Joes and Transformers seem to be dominating the toy shows these days, so it looks like they are occupying that demographic sweet spot for nostalgia currently.
Looks like the Star Wars stuff has stopped moving the way it was in the previous decade.Comment

Sorry thats why I hate Pawn stars and shows like it. 20K and I'll offer you 5K Sure you have to make a profit but come on.
American Pickers is the same way. Voice over.. This doo hicky can be worth 10,000. Ask the guy what he wants for it. 2,000. Oooo I cant do that look at this ding and that scrape I'll give you 500. Then the *******s show how much a profit they made on the guyComment

I have to side with the guys on Pawn Stars and Picker on this. Just because a item is worth X amount of dollars is no guarantee your going to sell it for that amount. These guys don't want a ton of inventory laying around their shop. They want stuff they can turn over quickly.Comment

They also show that for many items, it takes additional time and cash to invest in restoring an item. Something the original owners aren't willing (or unable to) take on.
Not to mention how long they might have to sit on an item before the right customer comes along. Keep in mind the costs of storing this stuff when they show the size of the back room, and don't forget the climate control given the fact that they are in the desert. Staffing, utilities, rent/property taxes/mortgage, computers and all the other expenses associated with running a store-front brick and mortar business.Last edited by samurainoir; Jul 13, '10, 2:13 PM.Comment

I mentioned this already on the Pawn Stars thread but I honestly don't think the guy wanted to sell his collection. I think he just wanted to be on tv. He was wearing a Transformers T-shirt and had Transformers posters all over his house. When he was asked why he wanted to part with them; he said he had a baby on the way and needed the space...no mention of needing cash or anything. I'm sure he could box them up and store them somewhere since he was really into them. He knew FMV and that's what he wanted. Would only come down to $18K which is why I don't think he was serious about selling them and just wanted some tv time."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."

It would be hilarious if one of you who has a cherry Mego collection walk into the Pawn shop just to get on tv and see what they would offer you for the collection."The farther we go, the more the ultimate explanation recedes from us, and all we have left is faith."
