Computer Monitor/TV question

I am in the process of putting a TV outside on my patio. I got the HDMI cable, cable box, etc, but not the TV yet. I have an extra 20" HP flat screen monitor that I was planning on using until I get one. I bought the HDMI-DVI connection, and when I plug it in, the picture comes on for about 5 secs and than goes out. The first time I did it, there was a msg about protection, but it went out before I could finish reading it.

Any help?
