I got to meet a Blues legend today...

In the threads on meeting celebrities, I never have anything to contribute, mostly because the people I most admire and want to meet generally aren't mainstream stars. A lot of people still won't recognize this guy, but I had to share the pictures. David "Honeyboy" Edwards is one of the few remaining classic Blues musicians performing. He's in his 90s, and still records and tours. He's hung out and played with Robert Johnson, Son House, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Tommy Johnson. I had a treat today - seeing him play live and meeting him afterward. I just had to share, so here's a link to the pictures:

    Awesome Amy,
I grew up in the Mississippi Delta, and have always had a deep appreciation of the Blues. It's always cool to see these true pioneers in person, the music is almost always better, unlike live modern music.

    Congrats!

I would love to have met him. I'm a big fan of the Delta Blues and it's history. Honeyboy Edwards has lived The Blues, he ain't pretended to be a Bluesman, he's 100% the real deal.

Thanks guys, I'm glad I was able to share the pictures with a few people who appreciate this kind of music. As a side bonus, the entry fee also got you membership in the Blues Society of Central PA. So I can go free to their other events this year. Can't beat that for $10!

That is so cool. I really love traditional Delta blues. Honey Boy has to be one of the last guys left. I really wish I knew what kind of vitamins that guys been taking.

              Nice photos.

Hey...he's the real deal...not like these new manufactured fake wannabes.

Glad you got to meet him, Del...

Its amazing how well, cigerettes, cheap whisky, and even cheaper woman have worked for some of these guys. Probably never taken a vitamin a day in his life.

Very cool Del, count me in as a fan of original delta blues as well. Its great that labels like Fat Possum still give these old timers a chance to show what they can do and reach a new audience.

I was posting more earlier, but my computer crashed. At the end of the show, Honeyboy sat there telling stories, about playing with Tommy Johnson, and especially hanging out with Robert Johnson. I never knew that Robert died from being poisoned by a jealous club owner. Apparently Robert was messing around with the guy's wife. The club owner only meant to make him sick and teach him a lesson, but a few days later, Robert Johnson died.
I'm trying to figure out how many other bluesmen are still alive today. There's one that is in his 80s, and still plays while smoking menthol cigarettes. I read about him on Yahoo, but for the life of me I can't remember his name. Another one that isn't quite as old(in his 60s or early 70s I think) that I like to go see if Buddy Guy. He plays more of the Chicago style blues, but he still puts on a great show.
John Lee Hooker is one of my all-time favorites, and I found out that he died a few years before I met my husband, who is the one who really got me into this kind of music. Apparently at the time, Nate was looking for someone to go to the show with him. If only we had met sooner!

Now I feel better. It's Pinetop Perkins, one of the guys that was playing alongside John Lee Hooker in "Blues Brothers."
