I didn't watch Everybody Loves Raymond during it's network run, but I've been catching it on TVLand (oh brother), and I actually like it.

That's another one that I am coming around to liking.
Ray is whiney as all get out, Debra has a stick up her butt, but Frank, Marie, and Robert are great characters that are well played.
My Niece, who just turned 9 amazed me a few years back when she stated, "You know, I started watching the reruns from the beginning and it really makes a difference when you see the stories in order. When they do something, it is funny because you understand what made them do that. You have to watch them all for it to make sense. I kind of get it now."

Ignored and refused to watch Buffy/Angel and Smallville for years. Figured those shows were all just "90210 meets ___________." Became a believer on Smallville about 4 years ago and just jumped into the Whedonverse last spring. Real happy I gave these "teen" shows a chance!

Yeah, you and Betty liking Smallville made me give it a chance. Especially when you pointed out the Clark/Lex aspect being very Greek Tragedy and the colors being an indication of what was happening in the scene. Very perceptive on your part and just the kind of thing I tend to miss, prima facie. I'm glad you piped up because that me give the series a second chance and I love it. Beyond that, my Niece is now watching every episode in order and I get to hear her opinion and, by extension, my Sister's opinion (and my Sister is pretty freakin' smart and well-read). They both have made me realize things, apart from the Superman Mythos, that make the series even more fascinating to me. It's been a nice shared experience for the three of us. Each of us have had something to contribute.
Given your literary and pop-culture background, if you and your accomplished family say Buffy/Angel are worth making an effort to view....well, I'm going to take up the challenge.Comment

Mystery Science Theater 3000 - When I first saw it, the shadows on the bottom of the screen were so distracting that I couldn't stand it. But after watching about 7 episodes (I was leaving the tv on for sound at night and it was on every night in my area), I began to ignore the shadows and started noticing the jokes and the bad movies, and I've been hooked ever since. MST3K hooked me so well that I'm a big fan of crappy movies now and have quite a collection of the lamest, most unwatchable crap ever made like Laserhawk, Cry of the Penguins, & Prisoners of the Lost Universe. I love really bad movies now. Just for the chance to mock them. Thank you MST3K. I love you.
