'Made in China' era coming to an end?

This is a great article about wages overseas. Could it be that one day the figures we enjoy collecting could be getting made state side? What an amazing turn of fate that would be!

If they had to make the figures over here the prices would go way up.

One can only hope. I wouldn't care about price. I always feel like I bit into a lemon every time I buy Chinese goods. Needless to say, I have that feeling way too much.

If it leaves China, it'll move to another 3rd world country with a low standard of living and lax labor laws. That's why it left US shores; our higher standard of living demands that we pay workers more and eventually it's more economical for companies to move manufacturing where things are cheaper to maximize profit margins.

Mexico would be a good place to relocate.

If something has to be foreign made (to save money), make it next door.

I could name a dozen reasons why Mexico and Central America should be the next "China"

I don't see much change for us... As a small manufacturer/importer (we are like 3 Art Vandelay's) I am not that scared (yet), because we are niche/boutique manufacturing. If we were churning out new toys at Mattel/Hasbro vollume? I'd be scared...

It's like: Say we were a car manufacturer and the parts were about to go up 50% because the factory was getting more expensive we'd be "f'd"... But what we make is custom parts for 70's muscle cars. We may see a small bump overall, but we are already paying a premium price for small runs of distinct custom parts. In my opinion the reality will be that the big companies will be paying more along the lines of what we pay now...

I feel the same way as long as they are paid decently.

As far as what an American would call being paid decently would probably be out of the question -- as least from the start so the companys could get their shoe in the door.
But after a while the pay and benefits would naturally increase.

It would be a copy of China -- but not quite because Mexico in not communist.
This means the era of Mexico being the new China would have a more limited lifespan than the China era

I'll tell you one thing, the America/Mexico border problems would probably be all but solved if Mexico became the new China.

That's what i was thinking also Mike. I think if we had more Factories there too that Border problem would decrease some. Distribution would also be better.

My only worry is that the production goes to a country like Argentina or India , where the quality is very very poor. It would kill the collecting hobby for me for sure if these end up going that way. However some of the smaller companies we love like Emce , Castaway , and Bif Bang Pow may be okay like Dave said.

If Mexico and Central America (M/CA) become the "new China"

                        1. Less US/Mexico border problems

                        2. Easy transport of goods to US by land.

                        3. (M/CA) has 2 oceans (for great international transport)

                        4. Supplies could be trucked in easily.

                        5. Population needs work

                        6. (M/CA) are stable enough that investors would not be worried of a government collapse.

                        7. US being right next door is right there for disaster relief to keep production moving.

                        8. Helping your neighbor helps yourself.

                        9. Company's can pay workers in money, tacos or marijuana.
