I hate what society has become. Parents are too scared, kids don't know any better. I really wish we could take it all back and really give something to our children other than paranoia and isolationism. Damn.
>because the kids don't want to or because the parents won't let them.?
I think the parents have a lot to do with it. Folks are scared, even though crime stats in the vast majority of places are lower than they've been in thrity years. And I don't think it's all video games keeping the kids indoors: WE were the video game generation, back in the 80's. (Notice you haven't seen a video game addict episode of any sitcom since the mid 80s.)
>Aren't we constantly on here basically doing the same thing?
HAW! Good point. I always laugh at any "them kids with their texting...." geezerisms 'cos for the last forty years you could just cross out "text" and sub "telephone." (Kinda like how you can scratch "video game" and sub "television" and you've got the parental fear of OUR youth.)
My neighborhood is CRAWLING with kids.... all the time.

I can hear the Mike Teavee version of the Oompa Loompa song as we speak!
"No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris Mannix
I wish video games had never been invented.I live in the mountains of eastern Kentucky.By the time I was 10 years old, I was exploring the forest alone.Just me, and a dog.None of my three kids would ever have considered doing such a thing. To them it was pointless. They couldn't see the beauty, and the wonder of nature that I saw.
^^I can't say I agree with that. I play video games and love nature as well. You have to find a sense of balance.
I can't enjoy nature unless I'm drunk and I don't think it had much to
do with games I played with when I was younger.
I'm just like Clark Griswold looking at The Grand Canyon minus the felony.
It all depends on the person.

My eight-year-old son plays plenty of video games, but he also reads, plays with his toys, and yes, plays outside. He loves riding his scooter on the sidewalk (and occasionally the road, though I tell him not to!) in the front of our house, or playing soccer or Frisbee in the back.
It seems to me that a lot of kids these days are not finding that balance.
No, they're not. They haven't been brought up to do so. Electronics are very prevalent in our culture. It's up to parents to set limits on how long the computer, Playstation, or whatever is on and plan other family activities.
Hey! Where's the waiter with the water for my daughter?
My kids would play video games all day if we let them. My boys enjoy all sorts of activities, but they rarely think outside of what's right in front of them. Sometimes, you just have to make them do something else. And, yes, kids do play outside around here.
