Do kids play outside in your neighborhood?

The kids at the other end of my apartment bldg somtimes play ball in the hallway. There's no carpeting, so they can sometimes be a bit loud. I LOVE it! Every time I hear them it reminds me of playing in the hall when I was a kid

Kids need to play and get exercise and interact with other kids face to face to develop their social skills.

Ha. You know, you have a point. I forgot about that aspect of childhood....
i.e. the notable benefits of embracing social and physical stuff at an earlier
age as opposed to locking yourself away.

I guess I was more trying to answer the question, than being cognizant
of "developmental" stuff.

We live out in the county on a highway, so my son isn't allowed to ride his bike up and down the road without an adult present; too dangerous. But he does go outside and play. If I think he's been sitting around in the house too much, I send him out. He also plays soccer and is in Cub Scouts, so we insure he gets fresh air and exercise.

My 2 year old daughter LOVES to be outside. We can hardly get her to come in this time of year!

The beautiful, blue water of the Pacific, just down at the end of the block and these frikkin' kids are inside, pale as ghosts, staring hour after hour into those little screens... Sigh...

I talk about this with my friends all the time, most summers since i was 7 or 8 I would ride my bike alone 3 miles to the town beach for swimming lessons I'd be gone all day til 5 for dinner. you can't do that anymore..
or the be home when the street lights come on rule is long gone

we built dens, bogeys, peg guns, and made tree houses

nowa days if i see a group of kids playing in the street there more than likely out on a raise jacking cars and nicking anything thats not nailed down

Our neighborhood kids play outside quite a bit. We live in a very safe neighborhood. I can't tell you how many times I left the garage door wide open all night (and I don't mean just unlocked, I mean wide OPEN) with expensive mountain bikes and other stuff inside and never once had anything stolen. One house on the block has a BBall net and that gets quite a bit of use. Another house has a large enclosed trampoline and I am surprised that is not worn out. Plus the elementary school and playground/park with a creek running through it is only a couple of blocks away and that gets quite a bit of use. My kids play video games with the best of them but they get outside often as well.

I don't have any kids of my own Sharry, but I have two nephews that I absolutely adore. And yes, they are brainwashed by their uncle Sandy-- I've got the older one already freediving down to 20ft, and they're both hooked on megos!!!

kids play outside in my neighborhood. I make my kids go out at least part of each afternoon, providing it is not raining. they need to be outdoors playing and not just watching TV and playing video games. my own kids are only allowed in the backyard though, not in front. I try to get out there to go for a bike ride or go in the pool, as my own hectic schedule allows

When most of us were young kids would spend all day outside on their own with the other kids. Today that's just not acceptable, if any kid under 12 was out unsupervised and something happened the parents would be arrested for neglect. My son loves to be outside, but he can't just go out in the yard and play, he has to wait until Mom or Dad are done doing laundry, dishes, paying the bills or whatever other household chores need to be done, and it just doesn't leave as much time as it should. It's sad that the realities of the world have to intrude so much on the lives of today's kids, but at the same time I sometimes wonder how kids in the 70's managed to make it safely to adulthood.

Do you think the fact that kids don't go out all day and play like we used to is because the kids don't want to or because the parents won't let them.?

It's been my experience that it's the parents that have stopped kids enjoying themselves outside by freaking that somethings going to happen to them if they let them go out of the front door on their own.
