Do kids play outside in your neighborhood?

It's the start of summer, and I have memories of kids playing outside w/jump ropes, bikes, skates, roller skates and Big Wheels. I don't live that far from an elementary school, so I know there are kids in my area, but I never see any playing outside. I think it's ashame in this day and age that kids are robbed of something so basic as playing outside in front of their own houses.

Do kids play outside where you live? Do your own kids play outside?

No, My son likes to stay in to play video games and so do his friends. It drives me nuts!!! So i shipped him off to his aun't house in North Carolina for 3 weeks with the no video game rules. She's an outdoors person and she has lot's of outdoor activities planned for him....lol

No, they don't. Never. Too busy playing video games and with their heads buried in their phones/blackberries...

The beautiful, blue water of the Pacific, just down at the end of the block and these frikkin' kids are inside, pale as ghosts, staring hour after hour into those little screens... Sigh...

Not long ago I lived in a complex a few miles away that had big communal
backyards. The kids used to come out and play there. Around here
there aren't many kids and even if there were there's reallly not much
          "play area" 'round here.

The small boy next door plays outside, and sometimes he peeks into the backyard if he hears the boys to ask if they could play out in the street in front of our house. Hate that though because that means I have to hang with them outside and I'd rather be indoors. I usually end up knitting in the car.
Those who look outside dream. Those who look within awake.

I'd venture a guess that these texting devices are the modern day equivalent
              of passing notes in class.

So, I imagine there's some talk about movies, the opposite sex, nerdy teachers
              and stuff like that.

They're texting all day long with the kids they were just at school with. I don't get it-- It's not like they never see each other-- They're at school for 8 hours a day with the same kids. Why do they need to text them constantly, from the moment they leave each other, until the moment they go to bed?

                  I live in an apartment

My neighbor's kids play Cricket outside my balcony door every afternoon -- and it's very annoying

I see some irony here. Aren't we constantly on here basically doing the same
thing? Granted...the kids see each other in person constantly... but I'm sure,
like us, they enjoy the specific particular benefits that simply
                      communicating through text can give.

                        We're Old..........

Kids need to play and get exercise and interact with other kids face to face to develop their social skills.

The kids in my old neighborhood did/do play outside. Bikes, skateboards, etc. My own kids did on our swing set and rode bikes until they hit teenage years and got phones. My parents also had a pool they would flock too up til about 2 years ago.

kids stopped playing outside when sega megdrive and sonic came out!

instead of going actual paintball, or rollercoasting they now do it all on hi tec computers

on a is it safe to play out note... i live in a rough part of town, and if some unruly drove down the street looking to snatch a kid they would end up getting mugged by the kids!
just the other night me and 2 neighbours were out putting out a fire after an explosion was heard... kids filled areosol cans into a bag and set it a light... huge bang

so no its not safe for my kids to play out but other parents think its fine for theres to terrorise the streets

back in the days we had bmx, parks to go to, we used to take a huge tractor innertube to the outside pool and have great fun, we had wasteland and allotments to play on, i grew up living alongside the rail tracks, as dangerous as it was it was the great outdoors, we built dens, bogeys, peg guns, and made tree houses

nowa days if i see a group of kids playing in the street there more than likely out on a raise jacking cars and nicking anything thats not nailed down

There are plenty of kids in our neighborhood that ride their bikes down the hill in front of our house. My kids are not part of that group because the cars go way too fast up and down our street. We do have a big back yard and a new playset (6-8 hours to assemble they claim--more like 32, but that is a story for another time) that they spend a lot of time on.
