3D TVs, not as impressive as you'd think. Short review.

I love video games and gadgets and tend to be an early adopter when it comes to stuff like game systems, HD TV and Blu-Ray, so I've been very curious about the much hyped 3DTVs.

I was at Best Buy today an decided to check out the new 3D HDTVs they had in stock. The clerk at BB I spoke to was very polite and helpful. I was handed a pair of demo goggles and put them over my glasses. The first thing I was shown was a soccer game in 3D on what I believe was a Panasonic. The 3D effect was almost non existant. To be fair though a soccer game is not exactly optimised for 3D.

Next I was shown a bit of Monsters vs Aliens on a Samsung. The effect was far more pronounced and actually kind of cool. The thing is though, it's not actual 3D. It's View Master 3D. It's several planes of what looks like flat 2D cut outs spaced apart to give the illusion of depth. The scene from Monsters vs Aliens I saw was at the beginning with a guy playing with a paddle ball. The effect was really no better than it was decades ago with the similar paddle ball scene from House of Wax. Cool, but still just kind of a gimmick.

The 3D effect also looked to me to put everything into a soft focus and lacked the crystal clear crispness of traditional HDTV. I also noticed my eyes starting to tear after a couple minutes. Your mileage may very, but I don't think I could sit through an entire two hour movie or a long video game session on an 3D HDTV set. The price was high but I guess probably not crazy high for new tech. The Samsung was priced around $2500. I believe that was the 46 inch model.

I know Sony is pushing 3D hard and a couple PS3 games have been already patched for 3D and many native 3D games are coming. But they didn't have any 3D Bravias in stock so I couldn't check those out.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Yeah 3D at home isn't going to work. The technology just isn't there and nobody wants to wear dorky glasses around their house, IMO.

I got to see a bunch od 3DTV demo stuff when they were doing a big roadshow of the technology a few months ago... It's weird- it's less fully realized 3D objects and more 2D objects arranged on different planes. I also saw quite a bit of ghosting on all the sets and demo material I saw. It was funny to go see Toy Story 3 and somehow you can get rich, fully realized 3D with a 50 cent pair of polarized glasses in the theater, and the $100 technoglasses you have to wear for home 3D can't touch it.

They should have spent more time figuring out a way to make a TV that behaves the way 3D projectors do instead of trying to make a new system (I think it might be a limitation of the medium; I'm not sure you can get the kind of immersive 3D we get in theaters without a projector)

3D at home IS going to work, because people WANT it to. They are easily led, and the commercials say that THIS is the wave of the future, so, even though it sucks, they have to keep up with the joneses, and the joneses have a 3DTV.

I've seen demos of both the Samsung and Panasonic 3D sets, and was less than impressed. Plus I could start to feel eyestrain after a few minutes. There are many reasons why these TVs will not succeed on any more than a niche level. And Werewolf is right, I vastly prefer a sharp hi-def 2D film image at home compared to a softer, weird coloured 3D image. Someday, the technology will be there where actual 3D holographic type displays without the need for glasses can be used in the homes. That type of thing may succeed, but the current technology that everyone seems to be rushing to market is awkward, clunky, far from perfect and expensive. I'd be very, very surprised if it becomes popular to the general public.

I was actually fairly impressed with the 3D demo I got at my Best Buy. I guess my demo was better calibrated and handled. But it's not enough for me to go 3D yet.

I'm looking forward to the Nintendo 3DS that comes out in 2011. It doesn't use glasses, but you do have to hold the unit in the "sweet-spot" to get a good 3D affect. Apparently you will be able to watch 3D movies on it, but I haven't heard what is the delivery mechanism.

here's the difference between this and those:

You have MULTIPLE companies supporting this idea. This isn't like HDDVD, where it's just a 'format', this is a pretty hefty investment, and there are multiple companies buying into the technology.

this is what has been promised to people by futurists, this is the next step towards the 'flying car' and the 'bubble dome city' and it's ingrained in people's subconscious. They want this to be real, and they are going to embrace it in an effort to make it so.

because 3DTV is the next step to fully immersive holographic entertainment. Even if it is crappy in its infancy.

remember how awful the first flat panel monitors were?, they eventually worked the bugs out, and now nobody would be caught dead with a CRT. Do I want 3DTV?, No. I have poor depth perception as it is.

well for those of you with the older analog tv sets (like me), the 3d lcd shutter format works great though you do get flicker from it. I have not tested out any of the newer 3d tv setups the companies offer now. From what I gather the type of field sequential 3d that I have for my analog set will not work on the newer HD sets due to refresh rates, which is a damn shame
