    Wed Afternoon Trivia

Since we have a slight issue with Mitch's trivia contest, as the question was asked before, and answered rather quickly, here is another trivia question that should take some time to get answered. Winner get's a press proof sheet of my CIPSA POTA cards.

Adobe Photoshop is widely considered the best photo editing software available. It was released in 1989, under a different name, as a program bundled with a slide scanner. Adobe purchased the rights to it soon afterward and renamed it Photoshop. What was the original name?

    Same rules as Mitch's contest

1 answer per post and no search engine usage.

You are actually correct due to the fact that I worded my question incorrectly. I was looking for the name it was called briefly when it was bundled with the slide scanner. At least what the industry people called it. However, I did ask for the original name, which makes your answer correct.

So... send me your address and I will send you a proof sheet.

However, let's keep the trivia contest going - looking for the name it was called when it was released with the slide scanner.

Gotta point out Riffster, that it is a pleasure to send a proof sheet to a fellow MAC user from WAAAYYYYY back! You and I might be the only two people in the world who remember Display!

So, here is a very brief history of the program. It was written by a programmer in the late 80's to display grayscale images and it was named Display. His brother reworked it into a full image editing program and it went through several name possibilities before they came up with Photoshop. During this time, it was released bundled with a slide scanner (albeit a very limited release) with a unique name. That is the name I am looking for.

Wow, this might win the record for most complicated trivia question.

First computers used were MACs... then I went to artschool (still have a copy of PS 1.0), where the MAC lab was ALWAYS crashing. Stuck with SGIs for a long time (SoftImage user!) but finally switched to PC when 3D Studio and Maya was available. Bad experiences with MACs crashing everytime I used photoshop with an image larger than it wanted. No problems on the PCs. Plus I liked the building my own computers, and running Windows NT/Unix platforms.

Recently though I'm starting to get the itch to get back into MACs. I'm tired of futzing with stuff to get things to work on PCs. Even Ubuntu, which I love as an operating system, is getting annoying. I love the item behind open source, but having to find "comparable software" is a pain.

I'm too old. I want to plug something in and have it work across a rather uniformed system.

Thing that prevents me from going full blown MAC? Price. I'd rather blow my cash on Megos. Besides, I get my Apple fix on my iTouch and soon... my iPad.

As far as your question... are you looking for the name ImagePro? I was under the impression it was bundled as "Photoshop" with the scanner.

I don't remember much from my intro to photoshop class, but I do recall that stupid sounding name.

That might have been one of the names floated around, but it is not the one that was bundled with the scanner. However, you get an A for giving it some thought. And I liked your back history as well. Although I suspect that the Macs you were using might have had some other problems that might have helped cause those crashes. I never had any serious problems with crashing on the Macs in my department. However, I did keep them maintained meticulously. I would reinstall clean system software every 6-8 months and I seldom loaded any third party mickey mouse extensions and programs on them. Those seemed to be the major cause of crashes back in the early days. Everyone wanted to load their hokey extensions that gave them a pink calculator on screen or something. I basically ran a vanilla system and keep the software clean and very seldom did I have a crash. And I was doing major design and layered work in Photoshop long before they had a layers option, so I gave them a workout.

Sorry, I didn't answer that question completely. According to the history on Wikipedia, it was supposedly bundled as "Photoshop" with the scanner. However, I actually had an install disc for it in my grubby hands about 10 years ago (I wish I had kept that!) and it was clearly called something else on the disc. Brazoo gave me some links to some other articles and one mentioned that it was released as ... with the scanner in a VERY limited release.

Here's a hint: Combine what it was bundled with along with the name of a famous children's character that was on TV in the 80's and you got the name
