    Toy Story question.

Here is my odd thought for the day.

Been thinking about this since I saw Toy Story 3.

Having seen all 3 movies, its evident that the toys remember their past owners. In Toy Story 2 We see Jessie remembering her previous owner. In Toy Story 3 we see Lotso Bear and Big Baby remembering their previous owner.

However Woody, seems to only remember Andy. From Toy Story 2 it appears the Woody dolls were made in the late 50's early 60's, so Woody would have been 20-30 years old by the time Andy got him. Also in Toy Story 2. Andy's mom says at the garage sale that Woody is a old family toy (Was he passed down?). So where did Woody come from? Was Woody a toy Andy's father owned? Was he old store stock that sat unopened till Andy freed him? Was his previous owners so bad that he chooses not to remember him.

    Any thoughts?

We-e-e-e-ell...technically no toy remembers more than one owner at a time as far as I can tell. So maybe when a TS world toy gets a new True Owner, ie: one who loves them, the memories about the previous owner kinda fade.

I believe there is an unstated subtext that Woody was originally owned by Andy's father, who according to some extra-textual sources, is deceased.

I've always wondered if thats the case. If Woody is like the father figure/protector for Andy

Sounds like a prequel is in order.

It would fit quite will if Woody did originally belong to Andy's deceased father. His devotion to Andy after having lost Andy's father, the mother's reluctance to part with Woody at the yard sale in the second movie, and Andy's attachment to Woody up to deciding to bring him to college with him.

The one thing that didn't quite "work" for me was Jessie and Mrs Potato Head belonging to Andy exclusively... I kind of thought that they were going to belong to his sister (wasn't that used to incent Jessie in the second movie?).

Woody sat at the bottom of Santas Bag for a long time.

Toy Story 4: Woody Origins. I think they'll have to tell that story. I'd be interested in seeing it.

I wonder if Joss Whedon would know? Wasn't he involved with the script for the original movie?

I had forgotten about that! He was script doctoring quite a number of things prior to the Buffy TV series.

I'm quite happy to see Toy Story 3 as the final part of this series. Although given how well Toy Story merch sells, I'm sure this won't be the case. I understand that they are already working on Toy Story (and Cars) Shorts.

When you think about it, Toy Story toys have never really left the shelves have they? From the original film through to Toy Story 2, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command animated series etc. Buzz, Woody and co seem to have "legs".

12 inch GI JOES, Gene Simmons, Alien, Roger Moore's Moonraker doll, Boba Fett and the large run of Johnny West toys
Could be possible, looks like Harry is a mego-head regarding Gene Simmons and Moonraker Action Figures.

Although I get why Harry's upset that Andy gave Bonnie his beloved Woody doll, I'm not sure I'm that comfortable about him admitting it in such a loud manner.

After all, Lassater has mentioned the origins of Toy Story 2 came from the fact that he had young sons who would come to his office and how awkward it was that he wouldn't let them play with the collection of vintage toys (many that were still in the package).

Part of the message of Toy Story has always been that Toys are meant to be played with.

Although here's a question to the Mego collectors here... what would you do if you stumbled across a child playing with their beloved Aquaman's Great White Shark? Mego John Steed? An original Jet Jungle? Circle Suit Spiderman? Original Secret Identity figures? A Greatest American Hero prototype? Grease Megos? or whatever else is considered "Rare and Valuable" around these parts?

I was talking to my wife about this thread, and she may have hit the nail on the head.

Andy is really Andy JR. The name on Woody's shoe in Toy Story 1 and early on in Toy Story 2 was put there by his father, Andy SR.

Your wife is absolutely brilliant! That is a great explanation.

                              I'm awarding her a no-prize.
